Converting major media entities into a Broadway creation will put on a different pair of pants next June, as Spongebob takes on the musical stage. In an effort to not only captivate the existing audience base for the cartoon, several big-named musicians have been tapped to compose original music for the adaptation including David Bowie, They Might Be Giants, Cyndi Lauper, and The Flaming Lips.

David Bowie is no newbie to composing stellar musical productions, and he’s also someone who brings a little history with Spongebob Squarepants to the table (unlike some of the other musical acts who will join him in writing for this performance). Bowie had a voice role in the TV movie of Spongebob’s Atlantis Squarepantis, in the part of Lord Royal Highness of Atlantis. Bowie’s fandom and affection for the cartoon will make the addition of his talent’s to Spongebob on stage even better.

The musical for Spongebob Squarepants will debut in Chicago in early June 2016 and run through July before taking the official Broadway stage in New York for a series of shows stretching into 2017.
