💡 Roll Counting Tips
Count contacts first. For open rolls, each R and L contact is a stroke; the sticking pattern only changes which hand owns the contacts.
Treat buzz as an estimate. A press roll does not have a perfectly fixed bounce count, so use buzz contacts to compare density rather than to police every grain.
Use bars for written music. When the roll is printed in a part, bar count and subdivision usually give a cleaner answer than stopwatch seconds.
Add buffer for practice blocks. A small extra count helps you train clean starts and releases without changing the written stroke count.

Planning prevents you from running out of momentum when performing by ensuring you know exactly how many strokes is needed for the full duration of a passage.
