Accent first, speed later. Additive meters usually fall apart when every pulse receives equal weight too early. Mark the group starts, speak the pattern, then raise tempo in small steps.
Separate notation from feel. A written 7/8 bar can feel completely different as 2+2+3, 3+2+2, or 2+3+2, so practice the grouping pattern rather than the fraction alone.

Most musicians learn time signatures as static fractions before they ever learn that rhythm is realy about how those fractions breathe. One-two-three-four becomes four-eighths.
