💡 Fret Layout Tips
Nut datum: Always measure each slot from the same nut-side reference edge. Chaining fret-to-fret spacing can compound rounding and marking errors down the board.
Octave check: The 12th fret should equal exactly half of the scale length before compensation. Saddle compensation belongs at the bridge, not in the fret slot math.
Kerf check: Saw kerf does not move the mathematical fret centerline, but it matters for tang fit, slot feel, and clean seating during fret installation.
Metric builds: For short scales, metric coordinates are often easier to mark cleanly because each tenth of a millimeter is visually meaningful on compact fretboards.

Before you even put your hands on it, you know the scale length. The scale length affect more than just how far your fingers must stretch to play chord shapes. At the same pitch, the longer scale length of a Fender Stratocaster holds strings tighter then they’d be if strung on a shorter neck. That’s why the Strat has that snappy high end. How to Measure a Guitar Fretboard

Typically, builders select their length intuitively (or according to tradition) and then do math on the fretboard.
