Staccato sounds roughly half the written length: A staccato note is conventionally played for about 50% of its notated value, so a staccato quarter note at 120 BPM (written 500 ms) sounds for only 250 ms. Staccatissimo is shorter still at around 25–33%, while tenuto holds nearly the full value at about 95%. Adjust the length percent to match your style and instrument.
The rest gap is what creates the detached feel: Shortening a note does not change when it starts – it adds silence at the end. That silent rest gap (written ms minus played ms) is exactly what separates one note from the next and gives staccato its crisp, detached articulation. Lower the length percent for more space, raise it for a smoother, more connected line.
