Most bass guitars have four strings, although there are versions with five or six. The usual settings are E-A-D-G… That is the four lowest strings of regular guitar, only one octave more below.

Here the heart of bass in music; it must not seize your attention. It sits in the background, giving the harmonic and rhythmic base, on that everything else stands. The harmony builds from below upward.
Take the notes C-E-G: if the bass player strikes low C, one has a C-major chord. Change the bass to low E, sharply the same notes become an E-major chord. So, the bass player decides, what chord each truly is.
The frequencies of bass extend from around 16 Hz until 250 Hz. Those low sounds give to music wait, heat and that physical feeling in the chest. Here the real force of bass; one not only hears it, but feels it.

The electrical bass guitar ruled the last fifty years, but before upright and double basses bore the burden in the background. They however did not steal the attention. Today one still finds builders that handmake sorted double basses and uprights, working with brilliant players to perfect the sound.
