The 12th Fret Rule: The distance from the nut to the 12th fret must equal exactly half your scale length. This is the foundation of all bridge positioning. If this measurement is off, no amount of saddle adjustment will fix intonation.
Why Compensation Matters: String compensation accounts for the slight increase in tension when a string is fretted. Without it, fretted notes will play sharp. Heavier strings require more compensation because they have higher stiffness (inharmonicity).
Measuring from the Right Point: Always measure your scale length from the nut's front edge (where the string breaks over the nut) to the saddle's contact point. The nut-to-bridge-post distance will always be slightly longer than the scale length.
Fret Position Formula: Each fret position = previous position + (remaining distance / 17.817). This constant (17.817) is derived from the 12th root of 2, which defines equal temperament tuning used on virtually all modern fretted instruments.
