How to play
- Tap any dot to hear the note and see its name, finger and placement. The top dot of each string is open; below it the numbers in the corners are fingers 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Because the violin is fretless, most fingers have a low and a high spot a half step apart. For example on the D string, low 2 is F♮ and high 2 is F♯ — the same finger, moved. That choice is what makes a scale major or minor.
- Start on Finger tapes — these are the four spots teachers tape on a beginner violin: 1st finger, high 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Put a finger right on a tape and you get a note in tune.
- Open strings plays G–D–A–E. Play runs up through the highlighted notes. Vol sets volume. Keyboard — Tab + Enter/Space.
Violin fingerboard simulator If you are learning to play the violin, this widget help you place notes on the fingerboard in the first playing position. The aim of the widget is to encourage the link between the pitch and where you physically put your fingers on the string, an issue that many new learners of the instrument find difficultly.
Four strings are shown on the fingerboard. These is G,D,A,E, left to right. Below them are various dots on each string that correspond to different pitches on those strings. Above these dots are open notes on each string (no finger down) indicated by the top dot. The dots beneath the nut show which notes is played with fingers. Numbers in the corners of the dots shows which finger to play the note with: one through four.
How to Use the Violin Simulator
Without the use of frets, you place your fingers at specific places on the violin which then gives you the wanted note. Many of the numbers given for fingers are repeated on one string. This mean the second finger might be down low to give an F natural but up high to play an F sharp, for instance. In this way, the tool shows the positions of the notes, low and high. This helps explain how in a certain key signature the same finger may sound two different notes.
A row of buttons just below the fingerboard also enables you to select a note or series of notes to highlight for practicing. If you wish to play in the key of D major then all you do is pick D major from the list. It will then light up the notes that are in that key and dim out the rest. This provides an added visual help to see the pattern of half step and whole step in a given scale.
Helping beginners put their fingers in the right places when they start learning an instrument can be difficult. Teachers frequently place tape on a new student’s fingerboard to mark the correct spots for fingers one, two, three, and four. You have seen them stuck onto a novice player’s fingerboard indicating the position that each of the first four fingers should sit on. Selecting finger tapes from the widget displays those four important points on every string regardless of key signature. In other words it just tells you where to begin.
When you click one of these dots, it will play that note out of your computer’s speakers. It synthesizes the sound to make it sound like a bowed string so you can have an ear reference to the pitch being chosen. As the note plays, the display will change to reflect the note played. It will also show where to place your finger and frequency of the note in hertz. This creates a feedback loop that can help you memorize how each note sounds on each string.
Play button plays the note sequence according to what you currently select. For example, if you’ve chosen a major scale then pressing play steps through each note in that scale from lowest to highest. This is handy for matching what your ear hears with what it should look like. Watch as the dots light up and hear the sound of the scale playing back at you.
The Open strings button sounds the four open strings one after another. It’s a reminder of the lowest pitch on each string. You can use this before attempting to add fingers and create some sort of key from which to start. It will tune your ear into the raw sound of E, A, D and G.
Below this, on the lower right-hand side, is the volume control. Here you have a slider to adjust the overall level of the sound that comes out of the widget. It’s useful if you have particularly sensitive speakers or want to practice alongside others who may not wish to hear it. Set it to a comfortable listening level then get exploring the fingerboard.
For those that don’t want to use the mouse, there’s also navigation via keyboard. To select buttons, you just need to tab around the scale options and buttons to get to what you want. Then press either the space key or enter to activate whatever is in focus. That way it’s something that works for everyone regardless of which input method they choose.
You’ll also find a handy overview of the options available in this widget on the help panel, accessible via the help button. Hitting that will reveal a summary of the low and high placement indicators, plus how to interpret the numbers shown with each finger. It is a short lesson in the chart’s visual language. Use it as a point of reference if you are in any doubt about the meaning behind those highlighted and dimmed notes.
If you want an even more immersive experience, fullscreen mode is available too. Just click the fullscreen button and the widget will expand to cover your whole screen. On mobile (phone/tablet) screens this will make the fingerboard bigger and more visible. It will also remove distractions from the browser so you can focus completely on the instrument interface.
Experiment with other scales using this tool. Switch from D major to A minor and you’ll see how the pattern of highlighted notes alters. You will notice too that the third finger needs to move as the key signature changes. By making these comparisons, you are creating a mental map of the fingerboard which is impossible with static pictures.
Use this finger tape method to practice your basic positions. Listen to how one taped dot sounds compared to another when you click on it. Before you click try and guess what that next note is going to be. It trains your inner hearing. It also makes you a better predictor of finger movement. As you click, say out loud the note names. Use the physical dot to link to the abstract note name. This links seeing the dot to its sound. This also helps strengthen the memory. It transforms a passive view of dots into an active learning exercise.
The widget allows you to safely experiment and make errors. It won’t penalize you if you click on the incorrect note. You’re able to explore the range of both high and low finger positions, learning what impact these changes have on the pitch. Consider it your technical vocabulary sandbox.
Next, choose the finger tapes and listen for the dots of the D string. Follow them, one at a time starting with the open string, until you reach the fourth finger. Now try the A major scale. This will give you an idea of the route followed from note to note. Soon enough it’ll feel like home.
It’s not intended to substitute for practicing on your instrument but as an aid alongside this physical practice. Before you grab your violin, study the fingering patterns using this tool. Away from your violin, use it to double-check your intonation ideas. As a starting point, leave it open while learning your initial exercises.
Get to know every string. The highest string is the E string and the lowest string is the G string. If you want to play across string lines, it is important to be familiar with all four strings. Visual indicators are intended to be clear and unambiguous. Active notes in the current key show as bright dots. Dots outside of the current selection will be dimmed. Standard finger tape positions are ringed around these dots. This helps you filter out information that you don’t require right now.
The play function is useful for training your ear too. Play through the scales and listen out for which notes are played. Try to find the note on the fingerboard, then click the dot to see if you are right. It will exercise that skill of turning what you hear back into a physical place.
Play extended passages at a volume comfortable for you. If it’s too loud, you may feel fatigued or distracted. Too quiet and you lose the ability to hear details in the synthesized sound. Strike a balance so that you have no pain but are able to hear what you are playing.
Also remember the spacing between fingers is not absolute. As you travel up the fingerboard, the separation between notes becomes smaller. This is visually represented by the dots approaching one another on the widget. This reflects the physical reality of playing on a violin.
For a test of your memory, use the keyboard navigation. Without looking at the screen, tab along the scale buttons. Can you remember what scale follows on from D major? It uses your visual sense, auditory sense, and thinking skills.
Low and high finger positions are defined in the help text. This is important to understand. It explains what happens when you move a finger by one place on the strings, which causes the entire scale to change color. If you have never played a string instrument before do not bypass this section as it helps explain where some of the initial confusion can occur for people starting out.
The fullscreen option works especially well on phones. The text is easier to read in a larger size, and the touch targets are also larger. That means that even on a phone the widget becomes a potential learning aid for students without access to a complete computer desk. It scales nicely to the size of any screen you’re working on. And you can quickly move through the keys to see how they relate to each other. As you’ll see, A minor contains many of the same notes as C major. This link between two keys is called the relative minor. With the widget it’s easy to see the overlapped highlights and know which notes match.
The open string button is a nice reset function too. It brings you back to the basics of the instrument. These four tones underpin all melodies. Getting an idea about how they relate to the notes you play is essential to reading the notes.
If you like, try using the volume slider while playing. To hear what the dynamics do is instructive. Louder or softer playing can alter the tone colour. This is a bit of a simulation but the main idea carries over to actual bowing.
The interface responds directly to your input. There is no delay from clicking a note to it sounding. And this is crucial to develop reflexes. You want the response to be direct and naturaly.
Test your ideas about tuning using the widget. Select the scale of interest and see if the note corresponds to what you expect. Compare the way you are thinking about the note to how it looks. That’s a valuable skill for any musician to develop.
Note: The note names appear in standard notation form. Where needed, they include sharp and flat symbols. This helps reinforce traditional music literacy skills. You’ll soon grow used to reading them in context.
Take a break while practicing. Confusion can set in if you over-practice any single idea. Come back to the widget with a fresh set of ears. Often you’ll pick up something you didn’t see before.
Share the tool with other beginners. Learning together can be motivating. Compare your understanding of the finger patterns. Discuss which scales feel natural to you. Working together helps you remember better.

Leave the help panel open if you want constant reference. It won’t obscure the primary interface. You can look at the instructions without losing your place. It functions as a kind of safety net for new players.
Probe around the edges of first position. What is it like at the very top of the E string? What is it like at the very bottom of the G string? These extremes establish the range of the beginner’s repertoire.
Play through the scale using the widget’s play button and listen to the continuity of the sound. The notes connect to create a musical phrase. This helps shift focus away from isolated pitches toward hearing the music. It moves from thinking about technique towards thinking about tone.
The visual layout is clean and uncluttered. This makes it easier to think. You can concentrate on the music theory without distraction. Simplicity is key here when learning.
