How to play
- Tap a note to see its valve combination in the big diagram and hear the pitch.
- The three circles are valves 1–2–3 (1 nearest you). A filled circle means push that valve down.
- Like all valved brass, the tuba lowers pitch by valves: 2 = −1 semitone, 1 = −2, 1+2 = −3, 2+3 = −4. Open notes come from the natural harmonics.
- Play note repeats the selection; Play all climbs the range. Vol sets volume. Keyboard: Tab + Enter/Space.
- 3 valves / 4 valves switches instrument. Most student tubas have three valves; most intermediate and professional ones have a fourth, which lowers the pitch by 5 semitones (a perfect fourth).
- The 4th valve does two jobs. It extends the range downward — a 4-valve BB♭ tuba reaches down to a written C1, filling the gap above the pedal notes that a 3-valve horn simply cannot play. And it fixes the intonation of the worst combinations: 1+3 is noticeably sharp, so a 4-valve player uses 4 instead, and plays 2+4 where a 3-valve player is stuck with 1+2+3.
- Tip — F, B♭, D and the next F are all open (no valves) — use them as anchor notes.
A useful way of visualising the chromatic scale on the tuba is this interactive chart that displays which valve combination create what notes. Either use your keyboard to navigate around the instrument, or mouse click on the note buttons themselves.

How to Use the Interactive Tuba Chart
Let’s begin with the grid of note buttons on the left-hand side of the widget. These is all notes from low E1 upwards to high F4. Tap one and the correct fingering appear in big diagram to its right. Note that these are the circles in the diagram. These are the valves. Clicking a note updates the diagram to show which valve should be pressed. A filled circle means that valve should be pressed down while you blow.
You can even press the play button beneath the diagram, this plays the selected note. Included within the widget is a play all button which will run through the whole sequence of scales automaticaly. This allows you to hear how pitches are connected as a continuous line. It then climbs up the range step by step. You can hear the relationship between each semitone. To stop just click on the button again. While the music plays it transforms into a stop icon.
In the upper part of the page, you’ll find the volume control next to the play all button. The Play All button and volume control sits right next to each other. You can drag the slider to increase/decrease the volume of synthesized tuba sounds. This is useful when studying quietly or with a pair of headphones on. The volume is preset so notes are audible but not overbearing. If after extended periods of playing you find the volume excessive, then turn this down.
The ability to toggle between a four- or three-valve configuration is one of more valuable features. These toggle buttons is located on the bottom of the widget. Three valves are common on student tubas, whereas many professional and intermediate tuba include a fourth valve. This provides additional fingerings that can be more in tune as well as extending the lower range of the instrument. These alternatives appear immediately on the chart.
In addition, if you prefer a larger view of the widget you can enlarge it to full screen. To do so, simply click the fullscreen button in the header which will toggle the feature on and off. This feature is helpful on tablets or smaller screens because it gives valve diagram more space and makes the text easier to read. When exiting fullscreen the widget return to its default position on the page.
For those who haven’t played before or need a reminder about the controls, there is a how to play button which, when clicked, displays an explanatory panel that briefly outlines what everything does. It covers the empty and filled valves and what they mean. It explains why the fourth valve exists and how it can improve some of notes. You can close this panel without losing the buttons by hiding them from view.
For those who do not like to use a mouse you will be pleased to know that this is navigable with your keyboard. Use the tab key to navigate around the notes. When a note has been selected you can play it by pressing the space bar or enter, that means the tool can be used effectively by everyone. There is a clear visual focus indicator on the currently selected button.
Keep in mind that some notes do not need any valves. The natural notes are those from the natural harmonic series. These include key notes like F or B flat. As anchors they can provide a point of reference when moving around the scale. Equally crucial to know is when to let go of all the valves. This avoids excess finger and hand tension.
The chart shows you the note and its frequency in Hertz. This data are located below the main note in the hero section. This helps with the physicality of the sound itself. Don’t worry about trying to learn all these figures by heart. They’re only there in case you wish to know the exact pitch of a particular note.
The design is focused on learning valve combinations easily at first glance. Take a moment also to experiment with switching between modes on the valves and listen for how it alters the fingering. You will notice that there is more than one combination available for certain notes. This can be especially helpful when using a four-valve tuba. You can frequently omit the sharpest combinations, which results in improved intonation and transition. Switching modes on the widget clearly highlights these options. It quickly demonstrates potential benefits of adding an extra valve from a theoretical perspective. This is great for working on smooth transitions from one tricky note to another.
Pay close attention to the tone produced by each combination. Be aware that because instruments has their own acoustic properties, some fingering combinations will have a slightly different sound. This way you can use the synthesis as a point of comparison. Repeating a note as many times as you like helps create muscle memory.
Because it’s an interactive chart, you can check your knowledge at any time. The whole range can be explored as much as you want. Don’t feel pressured into playing it all immediately, or being able to play every note straight away. Spend some time looking for the patterns of the valve combinations. Many fingering are repeated across the octaves. Knowing where they appear makes it a lot easier to learn. It’s created to encourage curiosity and allow the player to make gradual progress.
