How to play
- Tap a note to see which keys to press and hear it. Filled circles are keys held down: the octave key (left thumb, on the back), the three left-hand keys, and the three right-hand keys.
- Going up, you lift one finger at a time from the bottom. To jump to the higher octave, press the same fingering and add the octave key with your left thumb.
- The four lowest notes (B♭3–C♯4) keep all six fingers down and add a little-finger “bell” key — B♭, B and C♯ with the left pinky, C with the right pinky.
- All saxophones share these fingerings, so this same chart works for alto, tenor and bari too — only the size and pitch change. The soprano is the small, often straight one.
- The soprano is a B♭ instrument like the tenor but an octave higher: a written C sounds a whole step lower (concert B♭). Play scale runs the two-octave scale. Vol sets volume. Keyboard — Tab + Enter/Space.

How to Use the Saxophone Fingering Chart
Here you can see the diagram consists of circles which represent the saxophone’s keys. A blue-filled circle means it’s a key that needs to be pressed down (with your thumb or finger), whereas an empty circle is a key that need to stay open. The layout has four sections that match the arrangement of the physical instrument. Starting from the top you’ll find the octave key, played using your left thumb on the back of the neck. Next come the three keys for your left hand and the three for your right hand, arranged in rows just like on a real saxophone. Finally at the bottom, you’ll notice the pinky keys that sits on the end of the bell of the instrument.
What I’m sure you’ll have noticed is that some additional work is needed by your little fingers for lower notes. At the bottom of the range (B flat, B, than C sharp), you need to hold down all six main finger keys plus use particular keys with your left pinky. Instead, the very lowest note (a C note) is played using the key beneath your right pinky. From here, you can simply release one finger at a time upwards through the scale. As you reach the end of the first octave, use the octave key with your left thumb to play this into the second octave. The fingering is exactly the same through the break on the main fingers. For instance, you might have a B flat at the bottom of range that has the same number of finger holes as a B flat an octave higher. You only need to add the use of the octave key for high version. This helps make learning the scale far easierer.
If you want to listen to the complete range of notes (bottom to top) being played automatically on the widget then use the play scale button. It’s also good to know that the fingering follows a continuous sequence that you can hear and see. The volume slider allows you to control how loudly it plays, which is useful when practicing in a shared area or late at night.
Alternatively, use the keyboard of your computer to tab around the chart from one note to another. Then simply select a note button and use either Space bar or Enter key to sound the pitch and see its fingering. If you do not wish to click each tiny note button separately, this will allow you to explore the instrument hands free with faster movement different than using your mouse.
There’s also an easy explanation of those keys and fingers in the help panel, just in case you forgot. Simply click the help toggle to open and close that section as needed. You can also press the “fullscreen” button in the widget to make the diagram even bigger, which helps with some of the little details when viewing on smaller screens like your phone.
The reason why it sounds lower than the written music suggests is because soprano saxes are B flat instruments. The diagram shows the written pitch alongside the actual concert pitch you would hear coming from a soprano saxophone. This means it will make sense if you play along on an instrument that does not transpose, like a violin or piano. You can confirm the exact place in the frequency range for all the notes you see on the chart.
Click through some simple melodies and try to experiment with them as you go. Use the visual guide to learn where to lift your finger on each note as you move one step up or down. You want to develop that muscle memory to the point where you can play without looking at the chart. Explore the range fully including the bright high C and the dark bottom B flat.
