Why the bottom target is higher: a tighter snare-side head improves wire response and keeps the drum articulate. These are repeatable starting recipes; head model, shell depth, bearing edges, and room can shift the best result.

This is a cool widget that enables you to virtualy tune a ten lug snare drum. This includes balancing out each lug pitch and comparing the snare side and batter side tuning targets. The widget can be used by simply using it with your trackpad or mouse (clicking on the on screen controls). If you want a quicker way of adjusting tensions then try using the keyboard on your computer.

To begin, choose one of the voice recipes from the right-hand side of the screen. There are three presets you can use: a crisp crack, a studio center setting, and a fat backbeat. These recipes identifies a set of frequency targets for the snare side head, the batter head lugs and the center of the drum. By default, the studio center profile will be active. If you change the profiles, you’ll see that each has an effect on the target frequencies per lug.

How to Use the Snare Drum Tuning Widget

This image depicts what you would see if you could look down at the drum shell as a sort of circular diagram. Around the outside are ten buttons in a circle, each representing one of the lugs (tension rods). When you tap on any button the oscillator simulates the lug’s current pitch. On the inside of the circle is the total target pitch for the chosen recipe and head type. You can then select any one of those lugs and it will show you its frequency and how far off (deviation) the current lug is tuned. If the lug is over two hertz out of tune, it has a dashed border around it.

The tabs along the top of the drum diagram allow you to switch back and forth between the batter head and the snare side head. Generally speaking, the snare side head is tuned higher to improve articulation and response of the wires. The widget changes the target frequencies based off what head you’ve selected and also visually shows which head is in effect. A faint graphic of the wire bed will appear when looking at the snare side, adding to the visual representation of physical context for this head.

After selecting the lug, there are controls in the bench section beneath the recipe list that allow you to further adjust the selected lug. With the raise and lower buttons you can adjust the selected lug up or down in hertz (one hertz at a time). This allows for precise micro adjustments without going past where you want to go. The selected lug frequency update in real time as you make these changes. There’s also a slider that allows you to turn the lug monitor off/on and adjust the volume of the lug.

The opposite pair at target button lets you quickly set the seat against the other lug of the same number for balance. If your target was for lug one, it will automatically set that lug and the one directly opposite it (on a ten lug drum, these would be 1 & 6, 2 & 7, etc.). This lets you get a base tension for the lugs. Then, you can go back through and dial in the remaining ones. If there’s big discrepancies on the shell, this is a quick way to take them out.

The check cross lug order button runs through each of the lugs in a regular cross pattern, playing them as they are rung out. You will be able to hear where the tension rods meet one another on the shell and you can pause this at any point simply by pressing the button once more. This is also the typical method of tuning drums professionally to achieve an equal tension across all of the lugs.

You can also use it with a keyboard so you don’t need a mouse to get around. Use the up/down arrow keys to increase/decrease the pitch of the selected lug by one hertz. Left/right arrow keys will move to adjacent lugs when the widget has focus. Pressing space will sound the current lug selection. Press X to begin/end the cross lug check sequence. Press B to toggle between snare and batter side heads.

You will find the control menu is a handy reference point for all the conventions and controls. Tap on the how to play button in the header and it expands. It shows how to mute one of the heads, how to tap along the rods to find your tuning point, and the numbered lug system. Keyboard shortcuts and other tips is included. Tap close once you’ve had time to tune up.

The fullscreen button expands the widget to the full size of your browser window when selected. This leaves you with maximum screen space dedicated to controls and the drum diagram itself. It is handy for small screens and for focusing only on the tuning interface. To exit fullscreen, click this button (or use your browser’s standard exit command).

Remember, this is just a starting point for simulation. Real drum tuning involves many variables, such as head materials, shell depth, and bearing edges. This widget can give you an acoustic model to refer to and practice with. Practice to understand how tension and pitch relate to each other. Tweak the lugs till the cross pattern is even and the difference is minimum.

So, listen through some of these different recipes to see how the snare sounds. Start with something like a fat backbeat and work your way through all the lugs one by one up or down. You’ll notice that switching to the cross check makes any possible imbalance clearer then if you had just checked each lug individually. If you do find yourself in a bind the reset on the opposite pair will put it right again quickly.

Choose a drum kit and tune all the lugs in sequence. Turn the adjustment knobs until you have each lug near enough to the target value. Double check it to confirm the adjustments are correct. Switch heads to ensure the snare side is responsive to the batter head tuning. You will be able to try different versions quickly with an interface that updates in real-time. Adjust each lug’s pitch carefully to achieve a more focused and clearer tone.
