How to play
Mouse or touch: select a rail step, then tap any open marker or fret dot. The six columns are E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4 from left to right; fret pitch is open MIDI plus fret number. Shape the selected step with rest, tie, palm mute, slide, bend, accent, stroke, and duration controls. Lock keepers before recasting an identity.
Keyboard: outside form fields, ←/→ walks the eight steps, ↑/↓ moves one fret, and 1–6 picks the corresponding low-to-high string at the current fret. R mutes, L locks, A accents, P palm-mutes, S slides, B cycles bend, D cycles duration, and X launches or holds the sweep. Focused controls retain standard Enter, Space, and arrow behavior.
Performance convention: a tie adds its duration to the preceding oscillator without a new pick; slide arrival ramps from the previous sounded pitch; bend rises by a half or whole step near release. Palm mute shortens the envelope. The guide click and every note use AudioContext time, so the loop does not drift.
- Try locking only the first and fifth steps: they become structural pillars while each identity redraws the connective motion.

This widget provides a fast way of building guitar riffs by clicking notes on the fretboard (or using your computer keyboard). It’s also an eight step sequencer that allows you to capture pitches and then shape there articulation too. Once the parts are locked in, the system will generate rest of the sequence. With full control over tone, scale, and key, you can create everything from melodic rock lines to heavy metal hooks.
In the pitch collection section, first select your starting point for music, which is your root key from C to B then your scale type (major, blues, minor pentatonic). Then you get to toggle between four different riff identities, with the fretboard showing only those notes that match your selected scale. The different riffs include low string pedal for driving bass lines; syncopated climb for phrases that move upwards; call response for melodic answers, and octave hooks that leap around in register. Each one repeat the unlocked steps in the sequence.
How to Use the Guitar Riff Widget
First, there’s the fretboard, where you’ll tap your notes. Each column represent one of the usual six strings on a guitar (low E on the left, high E on the right). Tap dots on the frets or markers for whichever note you want assigned to the active step. To choose what step is active, click on the number cards at the bottom of the neck. These are shown in the picking rail below the neck. Here you can see rhythm, pitch, and articulation of each of the eight steps of your loop.
After getting used to how it’s laid out, editing is super fast thanks to keyboard shortcuts. Use the left/right arrow keys to move from one of the eight sequencer steps to another. Up/down arrow keys changes the fret position of the active string. Number keys 1-6 instantly take you to that string. Single letter keys toggles certain attributes on or off. For example, A toggles an accent on/off, L locks the step preventing further regeneration, and R mutes that step. D changes the length; B cycles between bend depths; S adds a slide; and P activates palm mute.
The articulations include controls that allow you to change the sound of each note. The mute is used to add rhythmic gaps and rest. The tie allows you to sustain one note over several steps without having to start the attack again. Palm mute give the note a percussive, choked quality that can work realy well when playing fast. Bend rises in pitch at the end of the note. Slide arrival provide a glissando effect from the preceding note. There’s also an option to swap between up and down strokes which change the perceived duration and intensity of the attack.
How do you develop complex riffs? By locking. If you lock a step, it will not change regardless of the key or identity that you may change the sequence into. It’s like having anchors/hooks to play with as you explore what might fill in the space around those anchor notes. Recast resets all unlocked steps back to current key and identity. Undo also lets you go back to an earlier stage should you wander off track from initial concept.
Then there is the diagnostics panel which gives a review of your riff structure. It analyzes how much fretboard travel was involved in creating it, what the hook repetition was like, how complex the rhythm engine used was, and even how the pitch contour of the riff move around. It gives you an idea of what sort of thing you’ve created. If it sounds a little static to you, the diagnostics might show that you have too much repetition or perhaps not enough fretboard travel. That’s where you go back and edit accordingly and make your riff vary or move more.
The final step is adjusting sound in the amp section. Here you select from three different tone settings: Fuzz Cut, Warm Crunch, or Clean Edge depending on what sounds best for you. Next, you select how fast you want your loop to play using the tempo slider. Lastly, you control the overall output level with the master volume. If you need some guidance as you’re editing along, turn on the guide click option. Then all that’s left to do is hit the big launch button and listen to your riff loop.
I begin by locking the initial few notes from any melody I enjoy, followed by an attempt to change its identity to explore the growth of the riff. “Articulations and scales are experimented with until there’s something that sounds good. It is a mix of generated suggestions and manual editing to help find new ideas. Let the flow of it direct your creativity and take as long as you need to get used to what it offers.
