It’s an exercise to sharpen your ear. It is a way to listen and then re-create rhythmic patterns, tap or click the screen, or if using it on computer, simply type on your keyboard. The goal is not to get bogged down in mechanics but timing. It is a digital version of your practice notebook.
Each round are set in 4/4 time. Sixteenth notes is on the grid. To create a new random pattern click the New challenge button. Then press the Listen button to listen to sequence played against a metronome pulse. Be aware off the location of the clicks in the four beats. It’s your task to determine which sixteenth-note subdivision have the attack in it.
How to Use the Rhythm Game
Tap each of the numbered cells once you know the rhythm in your head. Every cell is a sixteenth note. Count from 1 to 16. The thick borders shows the main beats. It helps you get an idea where to place it. Click again to turn a cell on/off, do this repeatedly until you match pattern that you heard.
There is a Play my rhythm button that will play back what you think your pattern is. This previews your entry. Clicking on Listen again lets you hear what you have and what original was. Clicking on Lock it in locks down your choice when you feel confident about your answer. Then the system grade your entry.
Did you get it right? No. What was the pattern? At the top is where you choose how challenging a round will be. The challenge buttons are Easy, Medium, Hard. Easy makes rhythmic vocabulary easier to pick up by using eighth-notes as a pulse. Hard throw in syncopation along with additional complexity of grouping into sixteenth notes.
As you go through rounds, you gets XP points and a streak that tracks how well you’re doing. Keyboard Shortcuts make your work flow faster than too. Spacebar plays and pauses audio. No reaching for mouse required. N loads a new challenge at the press of a button. R reveals answer when you get stuck. Escape clears your currently selected item. That allows you to start over.
The Master Volume slider is in toolbar. Adjusts master gain level. Helpful if using headphones. Helpful when sharing your workspace. Toggle Fullscreen mode to enlarge the widget. This provide more room for the grid. There is a help button. Opens a quick help guide, provides quick reminders about the controls.
Turn off the reveal button and try to learn without it. Listen several times and strengthen that inner metronome. Also, try to recreate pattern in your head. When you get something wrong, erase the grid. Look away and try again.
Streaks is rewarded for consistency. They also help you measure how well you’re learning over time. Begin on the medium level of difficulty. This is a happy middle ground. Work your way up to the difficult level as your accuracy improve. It would of challenge your offbeat rhythm skills.
Hit the play button often. The click ensures your internal rhythm matches the digital one. The advantage here are the immediate feedback. It’s quick and it will sharpen your rhythmic hearing fastly.
