How to play
- Scale picks the type: Major, Harmonic minor (raised 7th) or Melodic minor (raised 6th and 7th going up). Minor keys are spelled the conventional way, so you get C♯ minor and G♯ minor rather than D♭ and A♭.
- Natural minor is not listed separately because it uses the same fingering as harmonic minor — the two differ only at the 7th note. The one exception is G♯ minor in the left hand, where the thumb lands on that 7th: it is F× (a white key) in harmonic minor but F♯ (black) in natural minor, and the thumb should never take a black key. That awkwardness is part of why exam syllabuses teach harmonic and melodic minor rather than natural.
- Melodic minor uses that same fingering too, except in F♯ minor and C♯ minor, where the right hand changes going up (the raised 6th turns a white key black under the thumb). Coming back down, melodic minor reverts to the natural-minor notes and the ordinary fingering. One more to watch: in G♯ melodic minor it is the left hand that shifts — its 4th finger sits on C♯ going up but moves to F♯ coming down.
- On the five black-key minors (F♯, C♯, G♯, E♭, B♭) you will see two versions of the opening finger in print. The ABRSM manual starts them a finger lower and gives the version used here in brackets as its own alternative; most other published charts print this version as the main one. Both are correct — from the second note on they are identical, and ABRSM's syllabus says outright that any fingering producing a good musical result is accepted.
- The golden rule behind all of it: the thumb never plays a black key in a scale. Every fingering here obeys that.
- Choose a key. Its major scale lights up on the keyboard — orange for scale tones, red for the tonic.
- The strip under the keyboard is the standard fingering. The coloured circle is the right hand, the grey circle below it is the left hand (thumb = 1, little finger = 5). Switch to one hand at a time, or to 1 octave if two is too much at once.
- Watch where the thumb (amber) reappears — that is the thumb tuck, the move that lets the hand travel up the keyboard. Over two octaves you can see it happen twice.
- Tap any key to hear that note. Play scale runs up and back down one octave, lighting each key as it sounds.
- The readout spells the scale and shows its step pattern in semitones (2 = whole step, 1 = half step, 3 = a step-and-a-half).
- Every major scale is two identical four-note tetrachords (W W H) joined by a whole step — the second half is highlighted. That is why the pattern W W H W W W H works from any starting note. Vol sets volume. Keyboard — Tab + Enter/Space.
Here is a useful widget that shows you standard fingerings for each note in the scale as well as providing an audio reference for how the scale sounds. There are options to play the scales either using your keyboard (for a more tactile approach), or simply by clicking on the interactive interface itself.
The widget include one and two octaves for each hand separately, and the three commonly used versions of the minor scale. To begin, you choose a root note from the top row of buttons; each button corresponds to one key from C upwards to B. Once you choose your root, the keyboard beneath it lights up with the notes in that scale. The tonic note is highlighted in red, while any other notes in the scale are lit up orange. You don’t need to work through the list of flats or sharps; this visual clue makes the pattern instantly apparent.
How to Use the Piano Scale Widget
A strip below the keyboard show the standard fingering for each note. The colored circle shows how to play with your right hand, while the grey circle below it shows how to play with your left hand. Your fingers are numbered from one to five representing your thumb to your little finger.
You can also choose to play only the left or right hand. There are buttons to choose your hands, making it simpler to work on transitions and thumb tucks without distraction.
You can adjust length of the practice scale. Using the octave toggle, you have the choice of one or two octaves. When first learning a new key, you will often find it useful to start with an octave because this keeps physical reach down. Later on, moving to two octaves allow you to work on repeating the finger pattern over a larger distance. The widget will adjust the fingering display accordingly.
Below that is type of scale to be selected from. These are listed as major, melodic minor and harmonic minor. Each of these have a different interval structure. Harmonic minor has seventh note raised giving it quite a unique sound particularly in classical music. Melodic minor has the sixth and seventh notes raised on an ascending scale. As this widget deals with standard key spellings then you will notice C sharp minor rather than D flat minor where necessary.
Clicking the Play Scale button will play through your chosen scale both up and down, showing the keys as they sound. The idea is to give you a clear sound reference for how the scale flows and what the rhythm should be. Any single key can then be tapped to just listen to that note alone. In this way, you can check the pitch of tricky intervals and repeat certain parts slowly.
On the right-hand side of the control panel is a volume slider that can be adjusted to match headphone set-up or listening environment. There’s also a Fullscreen button which will expand the widget to fill more screen space (particularly useful for viewing on smaller screens) so you have a fuller view of the keyboard and fingering charts. Another method of interaction with the tool involves using your computer keyboard. You can use the Tab button to move focus between different controls and keys in the tool. When one is highlighted, hit the Space bar or Enter key to trigger that note. If you like working without a mouse, this makes it accessible so that you can still get around the widget. It will also help you get used to the order in which you work through the widget, from selecting a root to playing back notes.
The next practical tip regarding this widget is that it’s useful to compare the two sides (left and right) so you can see that the thumb tucks in at a different note in each hand. A basic rule of piano technique is that the thumb never plays a black key. Looking at where the thumb enters and leaves the scale pattern will help you internalise the physical action needed. This may be helpful for you if you want to toggle from one type of scale to another easily too. Compare a melodic and harmonic minor scale in the same key. You can hear how it alters the sound of the scale when those notes are raised.
Below the finger chart is note reading section. It indicates the step pattern in semitones and spells out the notes. It links the information you see and hear with ideas behind the music itself.
Have a play through each of the 12 keys. How your hands travel around the keyboard differs in each key and they can all offer their own challenges with fingering. Practicing regularly with these fingerings helps develop muscle memory when you come to actualy playing the piano. As they say, it’s a tool for your practice routine. It is a way to take away some of the ‘guess work’ when you make finger choices and then get instant visual and audible feedback about what you have played. You could try it out in advance of sitting down at a piano to play through scales, or as part of a lesson check on how something is going. It offers an all-round learning experience with audio, clear charts and interactive keys.
To start using it, play around with the controls and listen for how the scale patterns change. Try playing a scale by ear using the keyboard interface, then check if your fingering matches the standard. Is your finger positioning the same as expected? Doing so will strengthen learning visually displayed on-screen. The more you engage with the widget, the clearer these patterns will feel.
While practicing at a physical piano, leave the widget window open on the computer screen. When you reach a challenging transition point, glance back and forth from the fingering chart. As you get more comfortable with the technique, you’ll use the visual assistance less and less. But just knowing it’s there means you won’t develop bad habits in your practice. It’s easy to get on with making music instead of fiddling around with endless menu systems. All of your options are right there in front of you. Choose a scale type, select a key, go for it. It is a no-nonsense approach to learning the basics of piano technique.
There are small differences in fingering for minor scales and these need to be kept in mind. These exceptions are accounted for in the widget (for example in F sharp minor). If you follow the suggested fingerings, it will place your practice in line with traditional teaching methods. This helps when moving toward harder music.
You might prefer the fullscreen mode as this gives a clearer picture of how the patterns work across the two octaves. If so, then the fullscreen option would be better than the regular one, especially if you’re looking to grasp the relationship between the upper and lower tetrachords. The lines help separate them visually and make seeing the symmetry in major scales easier.
Lastly, set the volume at a good level. Over time it can get tiring playing loudly all day in practice. Get this right so that you have enough volume to know what the instrument sounds like but not so loud that you strain your ears.
It should complement your practice not replace it. Support your learning through it and use it to build confidence in your scale playing.
