An example of this is shown in the chart below that give an overview of how many musical notes will fit into one measure. It’s an interactive chart that allows you to play with rhythms, see what the beats divide down to, as well as hear the interaction between note values and time signature.

Simply click on the controls or tap them with your mouse to get started. Alternatively, if you wish to navigate more quickly or control playback, then press the keys on your computer keyboard.

How to Use the Rhythm Chart Tool

Firstly, decide on your measure. Three popular time signatures is at the top of the control deck (the widget is set up with the meter selected at 4/4). By clicking on 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4 the number of possible beats per bar will be changed. Everything else follows from this decision. To make it easier to use keyboard entry click on the numbers 2, 3, or 4 which will jump to that meter.

Below the meter controls are another row of buttons that let you choose a note value. These correspond to common length values starting with a whole note down to a sixteenth note. The buttons each has an image of the note as well as its name and number of beats. When you click one, the visual chart will update to reflect the number of such notes that can be accommodated in the current measure. With the focus on the chart, you can also use your arrow keys (left and right) to step between note values.

As you can see from the image, it’s also a big visual on screen and shows what comes out of your choices. Notes that neatly fill the measure are solid bars. If your chosen note value doesn’t divide evenly into the bar then there will be a striped section to indicate this. It then shows how much space is left over. Above the visual is some easy-to-understand math explaining how the visual works.

The Walk the count button above the measure display activates an audible playback of the rhythm within the measure. Each time a note is supposed to sound, it plays a tone against a regular pulse at a quarter note. Clicking anywhere inside the measure graphic will also begin playback. As it plays, a thin cursor follow along the measure according to the playback. This allows you to follow the rhythm both audibly and visually.

In the upper right-hand side of the control deck, you’ll see the volume slider that adjusts the master volume for any synthesized sound generated from the widget. If you’re just interested in the visual aspect of the chart or it’s a shared space, you might want to turn down the volume some. Next to the slider track is the percentage indicating the current volume level.

Clicking on the Fullscreen button expands the widget to cover the whole screen to look more closely at the charts. It eliminates any distractions around it and provides the chart with more space, allowing you to see the visual breaks in the segments better. Simply click the same button again to get back out of fullscreen mode and back to how it was initialy.

For those who are looking for a quick reminder of how things work, there’s a Help panel. There’s a little button that says How to play which expands to show a keyboard shortcut list and other features in a brief summary. By default this panel is hidden so as not to clutter up the interface, but can be accessed at any time when needed. It includes an explanation of the striped remainder and an overview of the keyboard mapping.

To get further ideas on the connection of simple meters and dotted notes, try using them together. For example, if you play a dotted quarter note in 4/4 time it occupies a beat and a half. This generates some interesting leftovers that can be explored as well. Changing from one value of notes to another alongside meter changes develops your rhythmic feel for how things work together. You will soon start to see that durations and patterns are easier to identify because of this instant visual cue.

Keyboard shortcuts were created so you don’t have to use the mouse while exploring. Without clicking each button separately, you can adjust the note value using the arrow keys. When you want to begin the audio walk, focus on the main chart area and press the spacebar instead of reaching for the mouse. That way, it’s a smooth workflow while trying various rhythmic combinations.

This is a great tool for visualizing complicated subdivisions or checking that you’re counting correctly. It also makes things obvious by showing the complete notes and any partial remainder. If you’re interested in learning more about time signature or are doing some study on rhythm theory, it’s nice to have something practical to see the mathematics at work.
