How to play
- Choose a root note and a scale type. The keys in the scale light up — orange for scale tones, red for the root — across two octaves.
- Tap any key to hear that note. Play scale runs up and back down one octave, lighting each key as it sounds.
- The readout spells the scale and shows its step pattern in semitones (2 = whole step, 1 = half step, 3 = a step-and-a-half).
- Compare a major scale with its natural minor to hear the difference, or try the blues and pentatonic scales. Vol sets volume. Keyboard — Tab + Enter/Space.

It’s an interactive widget that can absorbs by onscreen controls but also, if you prefer something more tactile, using your computer keyboard. No need to download any other software; just play around with it and see what it can teach you about chord progressions and interval pattern.
The first row of controls are the root note selectors. These buttons is labelled from C on the far left of the button row to B on the right. Click one and that becomes your tonic note and the piano keys underneath change immediately to display the relevant notes for that key. It’s good if you’d like to hear a known tune played using different key.
How to Use the Major Scale Chart Tool
To change the collection of notes available, there’s the scale selector. There are options for major, mixolydian, lydian, and even major pentatonic scales. The selected notes is highlighted in orange, and root key is displayed in red. So you get an instant idea of what notes are part of currently selected mode, making this a quick means of trying out various tensions and moods.
You can play the two octaves of virtual piano with a mouse click or from keyboard. When a note is clicked on it sounds briefly and becomes highlighted. It’s also possible to use keys on your computer keyboard if you like, as this enables you to trace out scale pattern easily without picking up mouse. Every action seems clear and immediate in the responsive design.
Below the keyboard is a display that shows the note names being played (spelt out), and which scale it is. It also gives you number of steps and how they fall into semitone and tone intervals. This shows you exactly where the half steps and whole steps are. This gives you a numerical representation of what’s happening to back up theory behind it. You can refer back to this to confirm the distance between two notes or your mental picture of the octave.
Below that is a readout for the seven-note scale, and below that is the diatonic chord section. This create the triads constructed from every single degree of the scale and numbered in Roman numerals. Just tap any one of those chord buttons to hear three notes of that particular chord. This helps you understand relationship between chords in a given key.
From here you could practise popular progressions through to hearing how a chord resolves back to the tonic. When playing the complete sequence, it provides you with a sound point of reference for the whole pattern. Each key light as it plays in the sequence going upwards and repeating back downwards through the scale. If you’re checking where your fingers go on a real instrument or if you’re unfamiliar with interval structure of the mode, this automatic version could of help train your ear to recognize the form of the mode.
There’s also a volume control that lets you turn the volume up or down as needed. It’s in the lower-right corner of the app (just below the play button). Use it if you’re recording audio and want to make sure sound is being recorded consistently, or if you like playing late into the night, no problems here! Just slide it up and down as needed until it sounds comfortabley to hear.
A nice touch is that there’s a help panel that gives a brief overview of everything that’s on offer. A click of the help button at the top displays a summary explaining what each of the buttons does: it’s a reminder of how to play back, set the type of scales, and work with root notes. It’s useful if you’ve forgotten where something is located within the interface or want to demonstrate to another person how to operate the tool. You can then close the help pane when you’ve had your memory jogged.
The widget also has a Fullscreen mode. This will enlarge it to fill as much of the screen as possible, providing a bigger view of the chord grids and keyboard. This is especially useful if you’re viewing on small screens where some elements may feel a little cramped. To get out of fullscreen, just hit the escape key or click the same button again. This will help clear up visual clutter and maintain focus on the music theory content.
One thing you could do to fully use this resource is to play the exact same root note but on varying scales. This will enable you to compare the sound of the Lydian against the Major for example and hear what happens when you raise the fourth degree. Then slide the root up a note and listen for the pattern again. Experimenting this way builds a better intuitive feel different than just being told.
You can even tap in chord patterns to hear common ones like two-five-one or one-four-five. Begin with an easy key and play through the scale beginning to end. Listen out for how the leading tone pulls back towards the tonic. Then try plucking each of these chord tones to hear them in relation to harmony. Because it’s a widget for exploring, don’t be afraid to hop around as you like; curiosity is your friend.
