But that’s where the magic of editing comes in with the hits. To edit a hit, simply click on it (it will turn blue) and grab it and move it around. Drag up and down to change the velocity. Drag left and right to alter the timing. Or if you want to get really specific, click any cyan hit to select it and you’ll be able to move it around with the arrow keys. If you hold shift and do this you can nudge things around in one millisecond increments or one velocity point at a time. So you can gently push that snare hit just so that it sits just right in the pocket but not overshoot.

To hear the effect of what you’re changing, use the Audition buttons. For example, if you want to compare your edit with the correction, press Audit human take to hear the original timing and Audit corrected take to hear the quantized one. To get a smooth transition from the source to the target (over four bars), use the Glide through correction button. That way you can really listen and hear how the swing is pulling and how the strength pulls on the flow. You can also pin a particular hit so that it remains unaltered as you change other parameters or even flip back and forth between views.

Below is the bottom report panel which give you immediate information about what you did. There’s Target RMS which tells you how much error remains after it has been quantized, and then there’s source RMS which tells you how much the original hits was off the grid. Next to that is pocket delta which is an average of how far away every hit traveled. That will give you an idea of just how aggressive the correction was. And then below that is the transient inspector. It can show you all kinds of detailed information about the velocity and offset of whatever hit you’re looking at. It’ll help you see exactly what’s happening.

Once you have the hat timing dialed in try pinning the snare hits to see what effect this has on the overall groove. Experiment with other versions of the same Pocket until you get one that matches the style of your take. The Morph slider enables you to mix the source and target live, helping locate that sweet spot where timing is tight but not too human. The visual feedback allows you to see when you’re off grid and by how much. The first thing I did was pull in a couple of cyan hits that were obviously off-tempo, and then adjusted the feel using the control knobs. You can toggle the audition buttons on/off to listen to how the adjustments change the beat.

This simulator is helpful whether you’re tweaking a drum loop or learning about quantization. It provides you with the tools you need to listen for the difference. You should of have at it, and let’s see if you can tighten up the timing without losing too much character.
