The virtual instrument is a single octave (F4-F5) of first-position violin playing notes in the F major scale. Follow the ascending and descending scale lines to hear what each note sounds like using the playback controls. Alternatively, click on the fingerboard buttons themselves to interact with the device. It’s intended to give you a sense of how fingers should be placed and which notes they produce.

The series of green or red buttons across the fingerboard is the note for that scale. You can click any of them and it will sound out that pitch highlighted in the note ribbon and corresponding place in the staff. The buttons have the number of the finger needed to play the note, and the name of the note. Zero means open string; number indicates which finger stops the note. Below this is an indication of how much lower each finger needs to go to sit a semitone below the standard major hand position.

How to Use the Violin Practice Tool

The ledger containing the route is below. On the right-hand side, it details each step along the way. It shows the interval from one note to another, the string, finger, step number, type of placement, and pitch. This will enable you to check your string crossings and fingerings are all accurate.

Above is the ribbon of notes that gives a brief visual overview of how the pattern ascends; colored spaces mark out the half and whole-steps. At the bottom are the practice controls which enable you to select your playing style and speed of play.

The Tempo buttons allow for selecting a slow, medium or quick speed for the bowing. The Articulation buttons select from Martelé, détaché and legato styles of bowing. These alter how the synthesized violin sounds hit and hold each note so that you can hear various bowing techniques in action.

The trace buttons allow you to hear the complete scale being played back for you. The up arrow plays the scale upwards from F4-F5, and the down arrow plays it downwards. As each note is played back you can see which note is playing on the ribbon, ledger and fingerboard. This syncs your hearing of the notes with where they are placed visually as you play them back.

The F4 pitch is held as a tonic drone throughout so that you can double-check your intonation with an unchanging reference note. The dedicated button toggles this on and off. At any point, you can use the stop button to clear any drones in play and silence everything right away.

Finally, adjust the volume slider to whatever volume is comfortable for the instrument. The current volume percentage is displayed next to the slider.

You can make the widget fill your screen by using the fullscreen button. This will remove other items from the page and give all of the focus to the controls and fingerboard.

These are hand frames. For a brief overview of how to number your fingers you can look at the help panel, which is accessed via the summary label when expanded. It is tuned to A4 = 440 Hz (a standard tuning for violins). This means that what you see on the pitch display is the written pitch. For the violin this is the same as the sounding pitch. There is only an octave of notes available in the treble clef range and they all comfortabley fit into first position. No hand shape changes positions; everything has been thought out for a standard left-hand frame.

Visualise the hand frame on screen with curved fingers, making sure the spacing between the fingers is correct in the low first and low second finger positions. The following hand-frame diagram is from the fingerboard section. It shows how far apart each finger should be. As you work through the scale, keep checking with this image for spacing.

To make better use of space, you can also switch to fullscreen mode and enjoy the full view of the interface in small screen sizes without losing any interactivity. It works well when you want to display the chart on a small browser window or your phone, for example. Just click on the fullscreen button to go back to the regular page layout.

What’s also helpful is the color coding used for notes on the interface. Whole steps are green, while half steps are highlighted in gold. You can see that the key center notes, F4 and F5, are outlined in gold which draws your attention to these tones. This allows you to pick out the tonic more easily without having to read all the labels. You can also pick out the other intervals and notes.

The volume slider lets you adjust the volume of the synthesized violin against a metronome, or whatever other music you are playing. So it can be played quietly in the background, and even turned up a bit so that the reference tone is clearly heard without drowning out other sounds. This is perfect if you’re recording or just trying to play along with something else.

There’s also a status bar at the bottom of it all, which updates in realtime to let you know what you’re doing. When the drone turns on, it lets you know. When you select a new tempo, it confirms it too. And when you click one of the individual buttons, it says the note you’ve just chosen. The text output will help confirm that the widget is responding as expected to your input.

Play through it up and down a couple of times, using various tempos. Pay attention to the accuracy of the intervals and the stability of the lower fingers.
