Standard modern alto saxophone fingering convention. Alternate fingerings vary with instrument, intonation, and musical context; this plate labels the two common B♭ routes explicitly.

The following widget shows an interactive version of the F major scale, as it would be played on an E- flat Alto Saxophone. It combines a synthetically generated sound with the diagram so not only can you see which fingers to use but also hear what each set of fingerings will produce. To operate, simply click on any one of the note cards (using either the mouse or your computer keyboard) and it will step through the chart for you.

These include eight note cards covering F4 up to F5 on the main area. These shows in visual form which keys you press down when playing that note and which ones stay up (open). There’s also an octave lever key labeled O at the top of each one. The keys below it, played with your left hand, are labeled G, A and B. Above, the keys for your right hand are D, E and F. A particular key is called out as S or with a flat symbol on it. This is the B-flat key. This can be played in two commonly found methods. Toggle these options using the button and the chart will update automaticly to show your selection.

How to Use the F Major Scale Widget

Tap on the card for the note and you’ll hear it played. It employs a synthesised reed tone, which mimics the sound of the saxophone. At the base of the widget, the status bar shows what note is currently being written down and what the note would be in concert pitch. The alto saxophone sounds a major sixth below the written note. For instance, if an F4 is written, it sounds like an Ab3. If you’re matching it against another reference then you can check the frequency too.

Use the dropdown menu to choose your next destination, and the chart will highlight the selected interval. Tap on the hear crossing button to hear only that two-note transition. That will help you home in on tricky finger moves.

To fine-tune your practice session, there’s the control panel where you can change the experience. With the scale pulse slider, you select the speed in beats per minute. For slower practices, try learning new fingerings. And if you want to work on smoothness and dexterity, go for faster tempos.

With the practice level selector, you determine the amount of information displayed. In the guided mode, you’ll see both the frequencies and the fingering codes. Fluent mode removes the text codes, leaving only the visual key patterns. Audition mode removes all frequency numbers. With this option, you’re able to interact with the chart but not see the frequency numbers.

There’s a slider to adjust the output volume which comes in handy when you’re sharing the same space during practice. You can use the hold checkbox to keep a note playing forever. It allows you to concentrate on mastering the fingering and not have the note cut-off. And finally, you can turn off the audio completely.

To play through the scale use the climb and return buttons. These will move through the notes from bottom to top, or vice versa. When a note plays, the corresponding note card is highlighted on the widget. While it’s playing, you can change the tempo at any time. This will take effect instantly, so you can learn at your own pace by speeding things up or slowing them down as you feel able.

In the transition diagnosis panel you have a written account of what happens physically. It shows which fingers should be lifted and which should be pressed. This supports the actual physicality of the finger action for each note change.

The fullscreen button enlarges the widget into full screen mode. It removes all distractions and provides more room for the note cards. It is useful in narrow windows or on small screens.

Next is the print button which will open the print dialog in your browser. This allows you to save a static version of the fingering chart. This removes the controls leaving only the key diagrams, ready for printing out. Use as a handy reference when you are playing on your real instrument.

Last is the how to play button that will toggle a simple instruction panel at the top of the page. It is a reminder of the simple rules about how to interact with the widget.

Get started with an interval. Pick one from the drop-down list, press the hear crossing button, and repeat until you are confident. Then try to reproduce the sound yourself. When you’re comfortable with this, switch to the fluent mode. It will help you learn to find the pattern through feel rather than sight-reading text.

If there’s a difficult fingering to master, slow it down. One thing I like about this app is the ability to check your intonation using the hold button. Just play the note then hold it as you tweak your air support or embouchure position. You can also use the B-flat toggle to hear the difference between the two popular approaches.
