It’s called the Vocal Warm-Up Player, which walks you through vocal warm-ups in a browser. You can control it with keyboard keys for speed or with a mouse. It generates scales and tones to test your range and pitch without additional audio files. Your settings appear on-screen and you can follow your path through each step of the process.
Choose your exercise shape from the drop-down menu to begin with. Four options are available: an octave arpeggio, a five-tone scale, an arpeggio to the ninth, and a lip-trill arch. Each one is designed to work on specific aspects of your technique and each will have its own structure. You can change the pattern before beginning to concentrate on the areas you require. This will also change how the tone path looks in the main window.
How to Use the Vocal Warm-Up Player
Select a vowel that colors your exercise (for example: an open ah; a forward ee; a rounded oo; a lip trill guide). Then, based on your selection, the widget automatically updates the filters to create a simulation of the resonance each vowel generates. Whether you’re singing or humming, this allows you to maintain consistent placement. You can change the vowel color and sense how various vowel shapes alter the same pitch range.
The pitch selector also sets your starting pitch. Just begin where it’s natural for you. The range includes pleasant sounding notes for most voice types. The comfort ceiling and floor allow you to set your own safe boundaries. If a note is higher than the ceiling or lower than the floor the widget won’t play it. It’s a nice safety feature if you’re trying to avoid pushing too hard into extreme ranges when warming up.
You’ll find a tempo slider that controls the note speed. It ranges from slow movements to more agile drill patterns. Select how many repeats you want by deciding how many times through each key it will play. There’s also a master volume slider so you don’t have to sing with the guide tone playing or make it quiet enough for you. This allows you to change the session to match where you are at the moment.
The widget is easily navigated using the keyboard. The Spacebar starts and stops the warm up route. D toggles direction, making it go down by semitone instead of up. G enables the tonic anchor that keeps a gentle reference pitch at your start note. Number keys 1-4 instantly choose one of the four exercise patterns. With these shortcuts, you can make adjustments without taking attention away from your singing.
A useful feature is the ability to activate a ‘tonic anchor’. It will hum the tonic note of the key you’ve chosen in the background as you work your way up and down the scale. This provides a solid reference point. You can use it to check if your pitch is accurate before letting go to see if you remember correctly. Once released, the anchor will fade away unless you switch the coach on/off again.
It comes with an itinerary feature with a structured three-stage warm-up plan. Select one of three routes: gentle onset; resonance focus; or agility ladder. The three stages is designed to be built up gradually from relaxed to energised. Tap on each stage to listen to the sample key, or play the full itinerary to hear all three stages. Use the breath reset time setting to adjust the pause between stages as required so that you have time to rest.
Visual Path, As you play through the pattern, follow the visual path to see how it fits. In this case, the scale degrees are represented by the vertical bars and the active note is highlighted as it sounds. Below, the numbers shows the scale degrees and the count for repeating a section. They also show the current guide note. The bottom line (status line) gives instant feedback about safety checks and route changes. You don’t have to stare at the screen all the time; the visual feedback keeps you oriented.
To begin, the gentle onset route opens up the jaw and lips and lets go of tension. This includes the lip-trill arch done slowly. Next, choose the resonance focus route if you wish to explore various vowel placements. Then use the agility ladder if you’re feeling connected and loose, and are ready to travel faster. If the route gets too intense, just stop there, change the volume/tempi, and continue.
To see more, click the fullscreen button to open up the widget in full screen. Handy when watching the readouts/visual path to stay oriented whilst singing. Click the button again or use the browser controls to return to normal mode anytime.
There’s also a help panel that has all the pattern info plus quick reference keyboard shortcut list. Turn it on if you need a reminder of which control does what.
Try various vowel colors on the same pattern. Sometimes an ee vowel will help with clarity, while a rounded oo vowel feels more open. If you notice yourself straining at the outer limits of the pattern, adjust the ceiling and the comfort floor. Trust the boundaries you establish because the widget was created to hold you within the safe limits.
With regular use, it can help build your vocal agility and memory for pitch. Start with a few repetitions at a slower pace. Get your feel for it first before making it harder! Try anchoring yourself on the tonic to begin with. As soon as it’s in place, let go and play with your ears. Listen out for the guide tone and try to follow along without forcing the note just because you can. You are after resonating rather than dominating.
Experiment with the controls to find what works best for you. You can make adjustments as you go and the widget responds instantly. As long as you remain in your comfort zone, there’s no right or wrong. Look for the visual clues to guide your pitch. Take a breath. Let the coach lead you through the shapes step by step.
Start playing when you’re ready to warm up. Pressing Space or clicking on the start button will start the route. You’ll notice that the visualization follows along as the notes sound and repeat. Experiment with settings along the way, keeping the exercise safe yet challenging. Let this digital coach help you find your voice and have fun!
