This one are called The Daily Scale Puzzle… An ear training exercise where your task is to name a particular scale.
To do this you have to listen to the hidden melody by interacting with widget using your mouse, touch screen, or computer keyboard.
How to Play the Puzzle
First, listen to the target scale. Push the button and it will play the notes going up from the tonic towards the octave. Then push again to play back in reverse. You can also choose to have a tonic anchor button that drones on the root note of the scale while playing one octave down. This provides a sense of how each note sound related to home pitch.
Pick your tonic note from the list along the bottom row of a dozen keys; each represent one of the notes in the chromatic scale from C to B. Alternatively, use your computer keyboard to pick your tonic. Press keys 1-9 for C through A, 0 for B flat, minus for B, and equals for the sharp notes. That selects the note which is previewed by widget and highlighted on the map as the stone(s) above it.
In this next step, pick what you think the mode is from the mode selector: Major, Natural Minor, Dorian, Mixolydian, Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, or Blues. You’ll see which pitch classes is included in your selected tonic and mode on the widget. That provides a visual clue as to what notes might be in your guess. When you think you have it right click on the check button. Your answer will be compared to the hidden scale in the widget.
If you get it right, it will play the scale one final time and you will solve the puzzle. If not, it will show you how many of your notes matches the target scale as a hint. This lets you adjust your next guess without telling you what the answer is.
If you get stuck, you can reveal some clues about intervals. If you click on the clue button, it will show a hint relating to the scale structure. It starts with number of pitch classes used in the scale. Then it tells you first two steps in semitones. Finally, it displays size of the final step to the octave. These hints should of helped narrow down your options.
The Breath Flute Slider adjusts the volume of the synthesized flute sound. The Sweep Button clears your attempt history so that you can restart from scratch. It also resets the map. If you clear your browser data or change the date, it will reset the puzzle.
Headphones are recommended for audio clarity. Listen carefuly to small details in each of these modes. If you’re not certain which kind of scale is being played, pay close attention to the interval clues. The keyboard shortcut allow you to choose tonic quickly and helps speed up gameplay. Toggle the fullscreen option for a bigger picture of the trail map.
Each day present a new puzzle. This is an exercise for training your ear to hear the scale patterns and the intervals they contain. See if you can work out the solution with as few tries than you can. Pay attention to how each mode have its own feel in the way it goes up or down.
Hit the ascent button for todays mystery scale. Then, choose your tonic and a mode that sounds familiar to you. Then compare what you’ve got with the answer. The more you play it, the better your ear becomes. It is about discovering the hiden trail.
