Every day on The Daily Chord Puzzle, you is challenged to guess a certain harmony. There are 6 different buttons that when clicked with the mouse will help you work out solution; alternatively, if you want to do it quicker then you’ll need to use your computer keyboard. The idea behind this is to listen for and logicaly figure out the root, quality and bass inversion of the enclosed chord.
You’re presented with an interface containing three tumblers to set. Firstly there is a root tumbler where you can pick any of the twelve notes available on the chromatic scale. Then there’s the quality tumbler that gives you choice of nine popular chord types such as major, minor, diminished, augmented, seventh and suspended. Finally, the bass tumbler allow you to change inversion by placing different note into lowest position. From here you need to make a selection of each of these tumblers to create your full guess.
How to Play The Daily Chord Puzzle
To identify chords, you first need to listen. Click the sound today’s sealed chord button and listen to target harmony. To help distinguish the individual tone, you can roll the sealed chord upward to hear each note played one at a time in ascending order. The volume slider control how loud the sounds will be when they are pressed.
By pressing the “audit the tumbler voicing” button, you can hear how your guesses compares to actual answer. It will play the chord that you’ve chosen but not submit it as a trial. Once ready, press the button to test your vault combination and submit it.
Your guesses will appear in the daily trial ledger, located on the right-hand side of the screen. This ledger note what percentage of the pitch classes you matched and whether your guessed bass note was accurate. Adjust the inversion based off the bass feedback and the root + quality based on the share-tone clues. You are given only a limited number of these clues, which is exposed one-by-one each time you click the expose one harmonic clue button.
The interface is easy to navigate with a keyboard. Simply hit Tab to jump from control to button to next one. The selected item will play when you hit Space or Enter. For audio actions, there are some hotkeys that does work. To hear the sealed chord right away, press R. To roll up the sealed chord, hit U. This way you can hear what you’re going after quickly without moving your hands from the tumblers to make adjustments.
There is an option to erase today’s trial marks if you want to start over with the puzzle (or make a wrong guess). It will not change the daily chord; it just wipes out the feedback and deletes information recorded in the ledger. So you could of play around with testing your ear against the same harmony as many times as you like.
The puzzle gets its material from the present calendar date. That means every user have the same target to aim at on any given day. It fits your tastes and screen size. It’s distraction-free: click the fullscreen button to remove the clutter and stretch the puzzle to fill your screen. For users on smaller screens, it will adjust its layout so you never lose access to controls. It plays nice with your system settings, including reduced motion and dark mode. And if you forget the rules, just click the “How to Play” button to open the help panel.
Firstly, try it out on the locked chord, listen to the colour of the whole thing. Then plug the root into the tumbler of roots and see what you get. Try each one. Press the audit button to hear how well you are doing before making a final decision. Finally concentrate on the bass note. Often this can be the trickiest piece in the puzzle.
