First checkpoint: map the workBreak the destination into sections you can finish in one sitting.

With Music Goal Countdown, that far-off finish line becomes a list of milestones to tick off one after another. That way, you’ll be able to see how much time there is to work with and how many practice opportunities might be available up until an exam, recital, or recording session.

Either click around on it with your mouse, or if you want quicker access, use your computer keyboard. Selecting which path you want to follow is the first step. There’s a dropdown in the upper left corner of the site. The choices include completing an original song, mastering a performance of a prepared piece, passing a graded examination, or capturing a release-ready take. This will set a five-step road map customized for each goal.

How to Use the Music Goal Countdown

Next, enter your target date using the date picker. That establishes the outer limit for your countdown. Directly below the date you’ll see a slider for “practice days”. Simply move it to represent the realistic amount of days each week you can practice. The widget use that rate to determine how many days remain. This shows you how many practice days you have. You should of be able to get an idea whether or not your schedule will support reaching your goal.

After setting up your options, hit the Plot this musical runway button to create the visualization, which appears on the right-hand side of the widget. You’ll notice it shows you five markers on a timeline. These marker each have their own description and label, walking you through the steps you need for whatever your goal is.

Below each marker is a little slider that you can drag left and right. By doing this, you can change the date of each milestone, moving it back earlier or further into the future to meet your comfort level. The tool will keep milestones in chronological order, so your plan always makes sense. And as you reposition your markers, the tool automatically adjusts the target day for each step.

Click the number buttons in the milestones to mark them off once you’ve completed them. That will fill up the marker and move you forward in progress bar. Reopening an earlier checkpoint brings you right back to that stage if you want to go back for any reason. The other options let you advance or rewind it by a single step at a time.

To do this, the widget offers some tools for stress-testing your plan in various scenarios. Hit the “stress-test” button if you want to simulate having one fewer practice day per week. It’ll recalculate how many sessions you have left and show how moving more slow will impact your runway. Anytime, you can hit that button again to return to your intended pace and view the same numbers.

When things are getting hairy (or you’re not sure how to get from point A to B), you can press the front-load button. That will move those two middle markers ahead on the time line without changing the end-taper. You’ll know that you need to address any gnarly spots first, before you’re up against a hard deadline for finishing. The next box with the checkpoint changes to match, giving you an idea of what to tackle right now.

The widget is easy to control without a mouse by keyboard users. Use the arrow keys to adjust checkpoint locations and timing, and use Tab to move between controls. For quick changes, just type the number of the desired checkpoint on the number keys 1-5 then press Space or Enter to stamp it. To reopen an existing checkpoint for modification, hit those same number keys again.

If you’re not sure where the controls are, there’s also the option of a help panel that will quickly tell you about them. Click the How to play button to show the how-to-play information. This explains what each button does with your mouse or keyboard. Once you know where everything is, you can hide it again.

There’s also a fullscreen button which maximizes the widget so you get a better look at the timeline. This will help to turn big picture tasks into workable day-to-day steps.

Keep an eye on the progress and make sure that you’re on target to reach your goal by your desired date. If things get crazy in your life, change how often you check yourself. If there is something hard coming up that needs a little cushion, adjust the checkpoints accordingly. It is a flexible guide to help plan, not a rigid schedule.

Now, take out your starting date and goal and plot it out. What’s your runway? Then try practicing at varying rates and determine how often you can sustainably do this. Run through the stress test in case there are some weeks where your schedule is going to be tighter. Learn to take charge of your preps and make sure that every single minute of practice counts towards reaching your musical goals.
