With the Delay Effect Simulator you create echo patterns that you draw on a one-bar timeline. You can use a mouse or trackpad, but using your computer keyboard is faster. To begin, pick your sound source via the Ink source panel (right). The sounds include a rounded electric key tone, a woodblock hit, and a muted synth pluck. Before committing to a pattern, strike a test pulse to hear how each feels as a voice trigger.

The main grid consist of sixteen sixteenth notes per bar. You can add your delay taps by clicking on a cell. Cells that have been activated turn blue. These are your active echoes waiting to be played in time with your source note. Clicking earlier in the grid makes it happen sooner, while clicking further to the right places it closer to the bar line.

How to Use the Delay Effect Simulator

At the top left, there’s a Master tempo slider with which you can control the overall speed. Or click in time with the song and use the Tap the session pulse button to set the beat. This will then calculate the BPM based off your taps; handy for matching to an external beat.

To achieve this, each echo tap pans left and right to alternate speakers with a stereo spread every time it occurs. Each tap is anchored by that farthest one in your pattern which becomes the anchor for the feedback loop. This means that the last echo regenerates back through the Return path controls, giving you depth and decay at the tail end of your phrase. Use the sliders on the Return path to change the nature of the repeated echoes. The Feedback slider determine the number of repeats. The Echo tone filter is used to shape the high-end of the repeats (lowering it makes them more muffled and darker). The Wet/dry slider mixes the delay signal with the original source.

Use the Dispatch a one-bar phrase button to play a complete musical sequence. It will then send that series of notes via your chosen delay taps. You’ll be able to hear how it sounds in context. There’s even a “Throw only the closing note” option. This lets you send only the last note to the delay while keeping the previous notes in the phrase dry.

You can move through the grid cells with the arrow keys if you prefer using a keyboard. Tapping Space or Enter turns that tap on or off at the selected cell. You can also press H for throw mode (the final note), T for sending a test pulse to check your setup, P for tap tempo, and D to play what’s there. Pressing Escape will clear out the active state and stop everything from playing.

You’ll also find presets in the Blueprint stamps section to jump-start your work. Dotted creates a classic dotted-eighth note repeat. Slap sets up a short and tight echo. Space drafts a syncopated pattern that jumps around the stereo field. Turn down the Echo tone filter and turn up the feedback.
