With the Online Step Sequencer you’re able to create and play melodic sequences on a sixteen pin grid through browser. You can use the interface by clicking with your mouse or use your computer keyboard to make editing quicker. It uses real-time audio synthesis with more traditional step sequencing. This mean you see what you hear as you make adjustments. Visual clues indicates the flow of the sequence and which pins is currently engaged. It is designed to be intuitive and simple to use.

In the tonal rail & clock section we begin with the tonal context; select your root note via the Tonic socket dropdown (C; B). Next, select the scale you wish to play from Scale rail selector. Options include the Major, Natural minor, Dorian, Mixolydian, and Major & Minor Pentatonic Scales. After selecting your scale, the sequencer will map the pins to these intervals. This ensures you stay in key and do not mismatch your pin-outs.

How to Use the Online Step Sequencer

You can also set the tempo of your beats using the Clock rate slider from a slow 48 BPM up to a brisk 184 BPM. For some swing in the rhythm, use the Pair lean slider to shift the timing from straight even beats to a shuffled feel. Lastly, adjust the length of the sequence using Live pins slider. This shortens or extends it from four to sixteen steps, allowing you to experiment with different loop lengths.

Looking at the main Pitch-pin lane we see the sixteen steps of your sequence. Each pin is a musical event. A solid pin sounds a note, a dashed one rests, and one with an arrow symbol act like a tie extending the preceding note. Click on any pin to choose it and hear what it would sound like. The selected pin microscope panel below will update to display settings for that chosen pin.

You can alter the Scale pin to move the note up or down the scale. Then, use the Register shift dropdown to move the pitch an octave higher or lower. Buttons marked Articulation allows you to switch between a standard Pulse, an Open circuit rest, or a Bridge onward tie. These ties are realy useful for maintaining a sustained melody while not having to repeat the attack each time around the step.

In the same panel are Performance voltage controls for shaping every note. These include the Velocity voltage slider (called Strike), which determines how loud and bright the note is played. There is also certainty slider for Trigger, which adds a random element so one of your pins will occasionally miss its note on some loops. It brings an imperfection and human feel to the sequence.

Then there’s the Gate opening slider that determines the duration of the note expressed as a percent of step length. Low settings yield short staccato plucks. Higher values allows the note to ring out longer. To further spice up the rhythm you have the Pulse subdivision ratchet buttons that set how many strikes occurs per step. So if you set it to two, three or four, what was just a simple beat becomes a flurry of rapid fire strikes.

The Voice patch section lets you shape the synthesizers tone. There is an Oscillator character dropdown that selects the waveform: Sawtooth, Square, Sine, or Triangle. Triangle and Sine create softer, rounded tones that work well in pads or gentle melody lines. Square and Sawtooth are brighter and more aggressive with more harmonic content.

The Envelope nose selector controls the attack time, giving you options ranging from a sharp Plucked character to a smoother Bowed response. The Tone ceiling slider works similarly than a filter cutoff, letting you adjust what frequencies is passed through, effectively darkening or brightening the sound. Bringing up the cutoff will reveal the full brightness of the waveform, whereas lowering it will muffle the tone.

The Undercurrent and Contour operators add depth and rhythm. In the Undercurrent section, you layer a Bass conduit and a Harmonic field drone below your melody. This can provide harmonic support. It can be a simple Tonic current (drone), a Root-fifth interval, or even a whole Tonic triad. The bass can sound in steady Root pulses, alternate between Fifth answers, or trace out a Walking scale pattern. Use the Support weight slider to balance these background elements against the main melody.

The Contour operators makes global edits to the whole sequence. They can Rotate the pins to shift the pattern. They can Reverse the current to play it back-to-front. They can Mirror the contour to invert the melody around its center point. Buttons for Weather certainty and Fold registers creates creative variations on probability and pitch range. If you get stuck for inspiration, the Seed lattice button will generate a random pattern based off your current settings and scale as a fresh starting point.

For those of you who like to compose, keyboard shortcuts makes editing quick and streamlined. The left and right arrow keys moves to the next or previous step when a pin is highlighted. To change the pitch of that pin, use the up and down arrow keys to go up or down a note in the list of available ones. Space or Enter will play just the selected pin rather than playing the entire sequence. The backspace button makes that pin either a rest or a note. If you want to tie the previous note into the one you’re adding, then hit the T key to set it as a tie. The number buttons from 1… 4 let you quickly set the ratchet subdivision. This means you can sketch out your ideas fast without having to reach for the mouse.

At the bottom of the interface, there’s the Pattern memory storage where you can save your work. You get three separate slots, named Graphite, Silver and Copper that allow you to store different versions of same sequence. To save the running pattern in one of the slots, click the Imprint button. To recall it later, just click Recall. This way you can preserve your melody but experiment heavily with transformations.

The Awaken evolution button brings some generative changes to the sequence. When turned on, the sequencer will change the pattern after a few loops. It changes the rhythm, the pitch, and the probability a little bit each time. This helps you find unexpected variations and keep things moving in the composition.

For a clearer view (in particular on small screen) you can use the Fullscreen button to expand the interface. To get the most from this, try pairing robust rhythmic support with sparser melodies. Set the Live pins slider to just 4 steps and start with a simple phrase that captures your core idea. Then build the harmonic shape by adding tonic drones or maybe a walking bass-line. Then gently extend length of the sequence. Flowing lines across the steps can be created through the use of ties, while the gate aperture controls the note duration so they don’t bleed into each other. To bring some improvisatory feel to an otherwise rigid pattern, reduce the trigger certainty on some pins too. A slight nudge of the notes forward/backward can bring a subtle human feel to the timing via the micro-shift slider in the editor.
