How to play
It also enables you to hear the difference between frequencies with just your ears. You adjust using your keyboard (accurately) or your mouse (dragging controls). There’s a visual graph on the interface. There is also an auditory graph that allow you to listen to each filter change live.
The main canvas has three nodes marked A, B, and C that is your primary points of interaction. Dragging a node around repositions it. Depending off the filter, dragging horizontally moves the frequency while vertical drags adjusts the Q value or gain. As you drag you hear a live tone so you can immediately get an auditory match for what you see in visual curve.
How to Use the Tool
The keyboard also controls the widget. Selecting Nodes A, B or C are done using the number key one, two or three. The up and down arrow keys sets the gain of that node; the left and right arrow keys change its frequency in semitone steps. Larger jumps is possible by holding the Shift key when you make an arrow key adjustment: this lets you scan quickly through the terrain. To hear what’s happening on the current terrain, just hit Enter. If you want to play a quick probe tone at the center frequency of the selected node, then hit Space.
Below the graph is the Filter Tool Bench that allow you to determine how a chosen node behaves. Select an option from the Excavation tool dropdown menu (Low pass edge, high pass edge, low shelf, high shelf, bell probe) to change the type of filter applied to that node. You then have a Center/corner slider that position the frequency of the filter, and a Lift/carve slider that applies amount of cut or boost to the selected filter. There is also a Focus slider that alters the Q value, which in turn makes the filter’s action narrower or wider. As you make adjustments to these sliders they’ll update the curve immediately.
The Signal quarry section determine what audio source the EQ is processing. You can select Pick sparks; Bass lantern or Warm ensemble and then listen for the effect of your settings on each of those types of musical texture. Each will highlight a different part of the spectrum, helping train your ear to work over a broader range of context.
Before beginning your session turn down the Field level slider until the sound is at a comfortabley listening level. Now you can compare your changes with the Survey monitor controls. Play back the audio through your custom filters from the default Excavated path. For the best results, switch to Matched bedrock so you can hear the dry signal without EQ. This lets you make judgments based on tone then loudness. Now if you want to isolate just the changes brought in by the EQ then use the Difference residue mode. It’s incredibly helpful for finding those subtle cuts and boosts.
In the Resonance expedition mode, you’re tasked with fixing a bad mix. Hit Seed the fault field to insert three unseen resonant peaks into your sound that add harshness. You need to make narrow cuts at points A, B and C to remove these faults from your track. Hit Survey the repairs to expose where the obscured peaks lie, and see if you’ve nailed the match. When you’re done, hit Restore flat terrain to reset the exercise so you can give it another go.
For guided practice, try the Blind core sample and Six-landmark descent modes. Landmarks guide you by playing a tone in six standard frequency regions. This lets you make an association between name and sound. For the blind mode, the EQ is hidden; then it asks you to guess: which filter family? Direction? Region? Log your diagnoses and watch yourself improve.
Here are a couple of practical tips on how to get the best from these exercises. Keep the sound at a level that doesn’t damage your hearing, always turn it down before starting. Listen where the background noise stays the same. If you think there has been a difference but aren’t sure whether this is a true difference or a phantom (caused by changing the volume), use the Difference residue monitor. Regularly switch between monitor modes, as this calibrates your ear to the dry signal.
You’ll want to take some time to work through the widget section by section. First drag around the nodes randomly to see what happens to the curve, then try out the challenge modes to hone your skills. Repeated use of these furnitures will improve your ‘ear’ at visualizing and changing frequency spectra.
