With the Pitch Accuracy Trainer, you can train your ear to identify rhythms, key signatures, intervals and even modes of music. Use this interactive ear trainer to improve your skills. It works by pressing a button on screen (using your mouse) or if you are a little quicker on the draw you could of use your computer keyboard instead.
At the beginning of every round select your desired level of challenge. Choose between Easy, Medium and Hard. This will determine how complex patterns and note choices is for you. For example, on Hard rounds, you’ll get slightly longer sequences with more subtle differences between intervals. In Easy rounds, phrases are shorter and the intervals are simpler. Once you’ve done that, adjust master volume slider to set a comfortablely listening level and away you go!
How to Use the Pitch Accuracy Trainer
To create a new exercise simply click the New challenge button. These is varied, from reconstructing rhythms, recognizing modes, to identifying intervals. To hear what you’re listening for just click the Listen button (or press the spacebar on your keyboard). It will play reference sequence/tone allowing you to learn its rhythm/pitch.
Depending on the type of task (i.e. Intervals/modes, pitch accuracy, or rhythm reconstruction), use the corresponding buttons like the choice buttons under the staff or toggling cells in a grid. Intervals/modes, pitch accuracy), choose appropriate answer buttons that pop up under the staff. These can be selected by pressing number keys on your keyboard for quick access too.
For pitch accuracy tasks, click on start microphone button to activate your device’s mic. Play/sing along with target and observe whether your performance is flat/sharp in the cents meter.
Rhythm Challenges use sixteen cell on a grid to represent sixteenth notes. Toggle onsets by clicking the cell. Your task are to reproduce what you hear. Before submitting, click Play my answer to hear your work. Then submit it for grading. Use either the Check phrase or the Lock it in button to submit your answer and see if you got it right.
If you’re stumped (or just don’t want to lose your streak), you can tap the Reveal button, which will highlight right answers on-screen and show you the correct answer. You’ll then be able to clear your answer and set up the screen again for another shot at it. No more penalty for making mistakes, and learning from them instead.
Keep track of your progress with the score panel at the top. See how many experience points you’ve earned, how many times you have answered correctly in a row (your streak), and what your best streak is so far. The more you build your streak, the quicker you’ll earn XP, making it a fun way to encourage continuous practice while keeping tabs on your improvement over time.
To minimize distractions, you can also enlarge the interface by hitting the Fullscreen button. This is perfect when you’d like to concentrate on visual feedback and audio cues alone. Clicking it (or pressing Escape) will take you out of fullscreen mode anytime you please. If you need a reminder of the rules for a specific challenge type, simply refer to in-game Help panel.
When practicing quickly, keyboard shortcuts improve efficiency. To show the correct answer, press the R key. To begin another round, use the N key. For the tempo challenge, use the arrow keys to move sliders around and Enter to submit an estimate. This way, you can stay in flow of the exercise without having to reach for the mouse.
If you want to improve your ability to hear more accuratley, then regular practice at different levels of challenge is a must. Work through easy ones first to gain some confidence before moving on to medium and hard once you feel competent enough. Aim to keep that streak going and learn as much as possible while keeping yourself motivated. It’s great fun and can really develop your knowledge of music while tuning up the ears.
