The interactive widget below allows you to see and hear barre chords anywhere on the guitar neck. Simply use your mouse to click on the buttons to play the note you need. Alternatively, you can use your computer keyboard to navigate the widget. This enables you to try out some of more movable chord shapes available and shows their changes at various fret positions.
Beginning with the Shape row of buttons, choose one of the chord shapes. There are six popular ones derived from the A and open E chords. You have a choice of major, minor, seventh variations on each one. Once you’ve selected a shape, that is what you’ll notice on the fretboard diagram.
How to Use the Guitar Chord Widget
You then apply this shape on the frets using the Barre fret buttons which are numbered from one to nine. The higher the button number the higher up the neck it is. When you place the barre at a particular button, the note will be raised by a semitone if you move the barre one fret up. This means you’re able to play the same chord shape in any key and not have to change where you place your hands.
The central diagram displays current chord configuration. Your index finger bars over the strings as indicated by the red bar. The other fingers is pressed down on the strings with red dots where needed. The gold dot represents the root note of this chord so you know the tonal centre of the chord. Where there is an x over a string do not play that string but mute it instead.
Press on the Strum button and you will be able to hear what the chord sounds like. It’s a synthetic tone, but close enough to show how each chord might sound in terms of its chosen voicing. This way you could tune your ear to learn about the difference between chord qualities. It is also a good check when composing to ensure chords have a stable feel or are more dark/bright, etc.
The slider labelled Vol at the bottom of the widget allows you to adjust the overall volume of the synthesised sound. You might want to set this initially so that there is no nasty surprise of ear splitting volume when you strum. This setting will then apply to any other chord you play in turn.
Controls and symbols have a handy help panel that pops out as a quick reference guide. To reveal the help panel, click on the How to play button at the top. This will explain what each symbol is for, what the keyboard shortcuts do, etc. Once you’re comfortabley with how it all works you can hide it again.
The Fullscreen button lets you make the widget fill your whole screen for a larger view of the controls and the fretboard diagram itself. This is handy if you’re using it on a smaller device, or if you’d just prefer to have the visual guide take up all your attention. Tap the button once more to reduce back down to normal size.
Alternatively, keyboard shortcuts let you control it as well. Use the tab key to jump between options and highlight the fret selector (or the shape selector). Hit space or enter to pick one of these choices. That way the widget is usable without having to use touch or mouse input.
Using the same E shape, try playing some major chords. So you would begin on the F major chord which is at the first fret. Follow this by sliding the barre up one more fret to get the G major. Next slide again until you’re playing over the A major chord at the fifth fret. Notice how the root note varies as you go through each of these positions.
Try a couple of chords based off the fifth string in the A shape. Here is how an A major chord sounds in both shapes. Notice that the lower E string is not present when using the A shape compared to when you use the E shape. This also affects the bass line and how full the sound is.
For example, if you need a C sharp major chord, simply apply the widget and it will show you where the flats and sharps occur in relation to the neck. In this case, locate the C major shape, then count up a further fret. The visual representation of the notes shows exactly where every semitone change occurs, strengthening the link between the theory and practical fingerings.
Explore some seventh and minor chords. You’ll discover how the different colours of each chord sound. A minor sounds dark because it lowers the third note; the seventh shape contains a dissonant interval that wants resolution. You’ll begin to understand what makes one chord sound like another.
On a real guitar, keep your fingers near the frets while you play. Below is a diagram of how it should be for the best tone. Use the widget to compare your finger-spacing with this pattern. It shows you how you are doing so you can play better over time.
I’ve stopped the fret range at nine for simplicity, but also to make it work. Chords you need for most songs is within that range. If you keep going with the pattern then you can use these shapes further up the neck. This widget focuses on those positions that are easiest to reach for a beginner player.
This lets you rapidly switch voicings and compare them against each other. Change shape from an A major to an E major at the same fret. Notice that all the notes have changed, but the key hasn’t. It will develop a level of flexibility when changing chords. So listen out for where the root note is being indicated on the diagram. This will give you a handle on what’s harmonically going on.
If there’s an E shape then the root note is on the sixth string. If there’s an A shape, the root note is on the fifth string. Once you understand that, it makes moving into new keys easier.
If you’re unsure about the meaning of any symbol, consult the help text. Muted (not to be plucked) strings are marked by an x. The index finger barring more than one string is shown as the red bar. The gold dot identifies the root note of the chord. Guitar tablature follows these rules.
Experiment freely with any combination of frets and shapes. You can’t go wrong trying things out with this tool. Play around on random positions and see what sounds good.
