How to play
- Choose a key. Its major scale lights up on the keyboard — orange for scale tones, red for the tonic.
- The strip under the keyboard is the standard fingering: the number in each circle is the finger (1 = thumb, shown amber, up to 5 = little finger). Switch between Right hand and Left hand. Where the thumb reappears mid-scale, that is the thumb tuck.
- Tap any key to hear that note. Play scale runs up and back down one octave, lighting each key as it sounds.
- The readout spells the scale and shows its step pattern in semitones (2 = whole step, 1 = half step, 3 = a step-and-a-half).
- Every major scale is two identical four-note tetrachords (W W H) joined by a whole step — the second half is highlighted. That is why the pattern W W H W W W H works from any starting note. Vol sets volume. Keyboard — Tab + Enter/Space.
This is a fully functioning piano major scale chart. By clicking anywhere on the screen you can see/hear and learn the fingering of each of the twelve major scales. To make it tactile, click on the keyboard of your computer and try interacting with it too. It’s not only a quick reference but an interactive way to practise.
To start with you select your root note. There are twelve buttons across the top row; each of these can be clicked on to select your key (C to B). The piano keyboard beneath will instanty update to display all the keys within that specific major scale. The scale tones is shown with orange lights. The root note is highlighted in red to show where the scale starts and stops.
How to Use the Piano Scale Chart
The real benefit is fingering. Below the line of piano keys is a row of circles that clearly indicate what finger to play every note with. The number corresponds to the finger you would have on your hand, so five is your little finger and one is your thumb. To make this even easier for you, when playing difficult figures, the thumb is highlighted in amber. It will help you develop muscle memory while avoiding those uncomfortable hand stretches.
Switch from left hand to right hand. Tap Left hand to display the left hand fingering pattern, or tap Right hand to show how it is fingered in the standard way. With your right hand. It looks different than the thumb tucks either up under or down across, depending whether it’s left hand or right. This is frequently the most difficult part of learning the piece. The widget also shows exactly when a thumb tuck happens. This moment is highlighted.
It’s not all about looking; it’s equally about listening. If you hit the Play scale button, you will hear the scale played up and down an octave. As you are hearing this, the piano keys light up in time with what you’re hearing, letting you link the visual representation of the keyboard with the sound. You are also able to tap on any key directly on the piano image yourself and hear that pitch. This is useful if you want to know how a particular note sounds alone.
If you wish, you could plug it into your computer keyboard and play that instead. Hit Spacebar or Enter to make the notes sound. Hit Tab to move the focus to the piano keys. This lets you get used to physically pressing them down without needing a real piano or MIDI controller. This is a quick and easy method of reinforcing where the note lies in relation to its name.
On the right-hand side, bottom corner, there is a volume slider. Drag this and change the volume of what you’re playing to a suitable level for practice. Maybe you have sensitive speakers, or maybe you are trying to practice late at night. Whatever the reason you’ll need to be able to hear the notes cleanly but not too harshly. Adjust it early.
The readout section gives you a text version of what is happening on the scale. Here you will see the number of semi-tones it takes to go up or down from each note. This is useful as it shows you not only the keys but the structure of the scale. It also lists the notes in sequence. So you can instantly spot what is a half step and what is a whole step. The intervals in every major scale are the same. As you can see from the widget, it’s made up of two tetrachords that span a whole step apart. Knowing how the scales work will let you apply the fingering logic to other keys.
It is common to have another fingering on the upper tetrachord particularly with the right-hand as the chart illustrates. Fullscreen mode allows for a distraction-free experience. Click the Fullscreen button in the top right corner to expand the widget to fill your screen. This gives you more space to view the whole keyboard with the fingering guide all in one place, so you don’t need to scroll around. If you’re using this widget as a main method of learning on your laptop/desktop, then this could be a good option for you.
This tool connects theory to practice. Start in C major (no flats or sharps) because the fingering is straightforward. From there you can move onto F major or G major to introduce a flat or sharp respectively once you feel comfortable. Your hand position will adjust itself naturaly with the visual cue. Don’t race through it. Play back slowly. Do this at a pace that lets you take in the sound of the interval as the scale goes up and down. If possible use the chart as a guide for your fingers and attempt to play it on an actual instrument.
The trick with the major scales is consistency. It’s responsive and intuitive. You can change settings and switch from one key to another without reloading the page. All adjustments are immediate so that you can continue on. Use it as a daily warm up routine, or as a quick check-in prior to a lesson.
As you repeat the patterns, your fingers will learn them. The chart takes away the element of guessing where each finger should go. It’s all about smooth note to note transitions particularly when you are approaching those thumb tucks. This is where the highlighted circles will lead you with confidence. By listening over and over again, you experiment with various tempos. Then you start to absorb the rhythmic feel of the scale, ready to attempt it yourself. This means that you are developing a good ear for how intervals sound and pitch from the audio feedback. It reinforces what you see on the keyboard with your eyes.
There’s no favoritism shown in this tool towards any key of the 12. It treats each major scale equally. You can look at the fingering for one key, like C major, and compare it to another, like A major, to see where the pattern changes. The structure stays the same; only the keys change. When practicing extensively, use a reasonable volume to avoid ear fatigue and protect your hearing. The default setting is balanced for most moddern speakers. Fine-tune it according to your liking and surroundings.

Before joining the two hands, you practice each individual hand separately. To help with this, the widget allows you to separate the fingering in just the right or left hand. When you feel comfortable with each hand alone, then give it a go playing both hands simultaneously. This is a typical way of learning piano scales effectively.
The instant visual feedback is clear and immediate. As you press the keys, they light up to show you exactly what you have done right away. It keeps you on track and involved in the practice session. You can watch yourself working through the various keys as you go.
Add this widget to your daily routine. Spend a couple of minutes per day and work through the keys on it. Remember, practicing scales does not need to be for long periods but needs to be done regularly. Gradually over time you’ll find that your hands adjusts to the exercise.
