How to play
- Tap a note to see which holes to cover and hear it.
- The diagram is the recorder held facing you: the thumb hole is on the back (shown to the left), then holes 1–3 for the left hand and 4–7 for the right hand. A filled circle = cover fully; a half-filled circle = cover only half the hole (roll the finger to leak air).
- Start by covering everything for low C, then lift fingers to climb. The naturals are simple; the sharps and flats use trickier cross and half-hole fingerings. F is a famous forked note (hole 5 open, 6&7 covered), and C♯/E♭/G♯ need a half hole.
- Play note repeats the selection; Play all runs up the whole chromatic scale. Vol sets volume. Keyboard: Tab + Enter/Space.
- For the second octave (D5 and up) you “pinch” the thumb — crack the back thumb-hole open a sliver (shown as a half thumb) and blow a little faster to over-blow the octave.
- Tip — the tenor recorder sounds at concert pitch (an octave below the soprano); cover holes fully (or half, where shown) or the note will crack.
The tenor recorder has a digital fingering chart. This means that there is an interactive widget that allows you to see where fingers need to be placed when playing various notes on a tenor recorder. It covers everything from low C up to high G. It also enables you to hear what those notes sound like while you are on the right hole(s). You simply use the keyboard or mouse to move around the instrument.
The main grid displays the available notes. These is each represented by a button that matches one particular note from the chromatic scale. Clicking a button chooses that note for you. The recorder diagram on the right hand side then updates immediately to show which holes are covered and open. It follows the conventional fingerings used in Baroque times.
How to Use the Tenor Recorder Chart
Simple symbols mark where fingers are placed on the diagram. Filled in circles represent finger holes that is fully covered. Empty circles are holes that are not covered by the finger. Half-filled circles show a half-hole fingering (where you roll the finger to cover just part of the hole). On the left-hand side you can see the thumb hole on the back.
Some notes are played in a specific way to ensure accurate performance. For example, note F has a forked fingering where you cover both the sixth and seventh holes but leave the fifth hole open. This will feel unusual initialy. The second octave begins at D but should of been approached differently. Crack your thumb hole just enough so it appears half covered by your thumb. Blow a little harder then before. The notes is played by pressing on them with your computer keyboard.
To navigate around the note buttons, simply hit the tab key which will place the cursor on the next note button. You can then play the note by hitting either the space bar or enter. This provides a hands free way of playing through fast sections of notes without having to click.
For accessibility the interface shows what is selected. It automatically plays all the way up through the note range. It’s used for testing whether your audio engine is functioning correctly. The label will change to stop while it plays, and you simply click on it again to stop.
The Master Output Level is a volume slider located in the upper-right portion of the control area that controls the volume of the master output. To raise the volume, drag the handle to the right; to reduce the volume, drag the handle to the left. Because this setting remains unchanged unless you alter it yourself, your audio will not play at an uncomfortably loud volume by default.
The help panel provides a quick reference guide. Click on the how to play button and the help panel opens up. Here is an explanation of the notation for cross fingerings and half holes. It also covers other key techniques. If you’re not sure what a note means just use the help panel and hide it when you’ve finished to go back to the full view.
Fullscreen: Clicking on this makes the widget fullscreen, which expands it to fill your screen. Without any distractions from the rest of the web page, you’ll have a lot more space to take in the diagram. This is handy for use on small devices. The button exits that mode when clicked again.
Play through the scale up and down to familiarise yourself with it. You will notice that there are different fingering patterns from octave to octave. In the lower register, you will mostly use covered holes, but you will use more open holes and thumb techniques in the higher register. The forked F can be a point where beginners stumble. Practise it until it becomes second nature.
The audio function is useful for checking how well you are tuning, so listen to yourself and match up against the widget. This will help in getting your ear in-tune for playing accurately. Click on through a passage of music or even click into the piece and try out the sequence before attempting the melody. It acts as a quick metronome for your practice sessions. It is a bridge from theory to application.

You need to develop muscle memory by practicing. Your fingers will develop a feel for where they should go with repetition. It’s always consistent, so you’re able to hone in on your finger motions and really nail down the mechanics of it.
