How to play
- Tap a note to see its valve combination in the big diagram and hear the pitch.
- The three circles are valves 1–2–3 (1 nearest you). A filled circle means push that valve down.
- Like all valved brass, the tuba lowers pitch by valves: 2 = −1 semitone, 1 = −2, 1+2 = −3, 2+3 = −4. Open notes come from the natural harmonics.
- Play note repeats the selection; Play all climbs the range. Vol sets volume. Keyboard: Tab + Enter/Space.
- Tip — F, B♭, D and the next F are all open (no valves) — use them as anchor notes.
Fingering for the BB tuba is represented in this interactive chart. Each note is indicated along with required fingerings on which valves to press. On the main screen there is a grid of notes from low E under the bass clef through to high F over the top of it. A note is assigned to each square and you just tap the square to see which valve combination is needed to play that note. The three big circles are the three valves and if a circle is full then that’s the one you need to push down as you play.
How to Use the Interactive BB Tuba Chart
The current pitch that has been chosen can be heard again by using the Play note button. So if there is a particular sound you wish to listen out for and do not want to switch up to another note then this is useful. With the Play all button, it will play through each note in turn from bottom to top which allows you to hear what changes in the fingering on your way up the scale. Clicking the button again stop the sequence at the point you have reached.
You can also turn up/down the loudness of the sound by using the volume slider. That’s great for if you’re playing late at night, or you have really sensitive speakers. Just drag that volume slider to the left to soften the sound, and to the right to make it louder. The audio will play from your device speakers. Remember to switch your volume on!
If you don’t want to use a mouse, then navigate around the interface using your keyboard. To jump between controls simply press Tab to move the focus on to the next control. When a button or note is highlighted just press the space bar or Enter key to activate that sound. In this way you can cycle through notes without ever having to lift your hands off of the keyboard.
The How to play button is really useful and shows a brief explanation of how the tuba valves work below. The first valve drops the note down two semi-tones. The second valve drops it down just one semi-tone. It also includes a list of open notes, meaning no valves are used. You then have the option to click on the button again to close the panel.
The fullscreen button expands the chart to take up your whole screen when you activate it. This provides additional space so that the fingering details is easier to read, particularly if you have a small screen where the diagram appears somewhat cramped. To exit fullscreen simply click again on the fullscreen button and the widget will return to its original size inside the page.
To start with, focus on building a sense of security around the anchor notes. These are the open tones that require no valves pressed; they include the following notes: F, B-flat, D and the upper F. They are straight forward notes to locate and act as reference points when exploring combinations that use valve one, two or all three together.
Tap on nearby notes quickly and play a phrase using these notes. Try to time the notes to match the valve changes. You could even try listening to how they sound using the Play all facility. It trains your ear to hear the difference in timbres of different combinations. Remember to set the volume at a level that feels right for where you are hearing this. If it is not loud enough, turn up a little first then press play. That way you would of get the full effect of the tuba-like sound ringing through your speakers.
Choose notes from the diagram then listen to them and attempt to name what valves are pressed down without looking at the chart. This puts the relationship between fingerings and sounds into your brain’s memory bank. With time, your ears will become a stronger guide than the written chart itself.
You can then use the keyboard control to jump around the range easily. This is quicker than having to click on every single square as you test your fingering, and it’s useful if you want to check multiple fingerings in a short period of time. The interface responds to both keyboard and mouse commands immediatly.
Keep in mind, however, that this is an approximation of concert pitch for a BB tuba. This means the notes appearing on screen correspond with the bass clef as found on sheet music. Aligning them in this way will help your ability to apply what you are practicing here onto real sheet music.
Explore the upper and lower registers as slowly as you can. In reality, the sound of the BB tuba is characterised by its low tones being very resonant, while the higher ones demand good air support and accurate valve control. These contrasts are clearly marked out on the chart for each note.
During the Play All demonstration, you’re able to pause at any point in the sequence. If there are areas that are proving difficult for you, then stop the play, highlight the troublesome note and study the fingering carefully. Use the Play note button to hear the currently selected pitch again. The valve indicators will be easy to see right away. There is no need to learn the combinations first to check yourself. It’s an instant way to get feedback which speeds up learning dramaticly.
You can use either keyboard or mouse control as you please. Keyboard may be more comfortable for some players in terms of anticipating how their fingers needs to change position. For others it’s more precise to simply click on the note they wish to play. It minimizes distraction in the design. There’s nothing extraneous; there are no complex menus or extra settings to mess with. It’s all about how much pitch is available for each note based off where you put your valves. It’s all right there on the screen.
In practice, have a copy of this widget handy as a point of reference. Open it in another tab or on a second screen and play through your piece. Cross-reference what your fingers are doing with the diagram so that they align correctly. This will create the muscle memory to play the right patterns.
What I like about this chart is that it encompasses what are considered to be common fingerings used on the BB tuba. You’ll find that if you have any questions regarding a finger for a piece of music then you can check it out within a few seconds. It is a useful aid for practicing regularily.
There are also the combinations of valves which play a huge part in how you can easily adjust your instrument by using more than one valve at a time.
