How to play
- Tap a piece to hear it and read where it sits around you. The view is from above, as if you were on the throne (marked you) — everything should fall within easy reach.
- A standard 5-piece kit = bass drum, snare, two rack toms and a floor tom, plus hi-hat, crash and ride cymbals.
- Play beat demonstrates a basic rock groove: bass on 1 & 3, snare on 2 & 4, hi-hat keeping eighth notes. Vol sets volume.
- Keyboard: Tab to any piece, Enter/Space to play.
The image above is an interactive diagram that illustrates where a typical drum kit sits when viewed from perspective of drummer. By simply moving your cursor around on any given drum/cymbal, you are able to click on each one to hear its sound and even use your computer keyboard to move through the set if you prefer not to keep your hand on mouse. What it gives you visually is a representation of how these instruments would surround you on stage or in recording studio.
When you trigger each item from the kit, they plays with their own unique sound. The drums, including bass and snare, deliver rhythmic, tight impacts. Cymbals, including the ride and crash, provides longer, shimmering textural sounds. Brighter accents that cut through in a mix include smaller percussion items like cowbell and splash. You can tap anything and not only will it play the sound, but it will highlight itself in the diagram giving instant feedback on where that instrument sit in the overall kit.
How to Use the Interactive Drum Kit Diagram
These can be heard in action within popular types of music in the groove section. There are five options here with simple rock grooves through to swing jazz feels and syncopated funk rhythms. Once the play button has been pressed, then the pattern of hits and their timings changes depending on which option you have selected. They don’t just show you where to put each drum, but also how it sound and how it contributes to the pulse and feel of song.
Below main diagram area are playback controls. The play button will begin (or stop) the active groove pattern. The sounds will loop for a bar and a half, which gives you plenty of time to get comfortablely following along with what’s happening. There is also volume slider where you can control master output level should the sounds be too loud for your space. This means you can lower the volume to study layout quietly. When you are ready to hear how each hit sounds, you can increase the volume to better hear the attack and decay.
You can also toggle it off to have a more detailed guide directly on the page. This guide explains key terms in the kit, such as what tom and snare is. It also provides hints on how to work most efficiently with diagram itself. It also shows you where you’ll find navigation keys on your computer’s keyboard should you wish to avoid using mouse at all. If you forget purpose of each drum or cymbal then refer here again.
If you really want to dive in, click the fullscreen button to fill out the whole screen with widget. Not only will this help you see where distant pieces such as floor tom and splash cymbal is positioned in relation to each other, but it also takes away any distracting elements on surrounding page so that the diagram can be clear and be seen easy. This is especially helpful on smaller screens, or if you just want to focus all your attention on visual map itself without anything else getting in way.
Click on each piece individually and experiment with swapping out different grooves. Isolate certain sounds in a crowded rhythm. Play just hi-hats alone, maybe with the addition of snare. Listen for the way they lock in against the steady timekeeping of the hi-hats. Clicking on the bass drum over and over as you play along with a funk groove could of help you feel where the kick holds the syncopation together.
All these little exchanges develop a naturaly understanding of what drummers do when they layer their parts into something that is far more complex than its simple ingredients. For instance, click on each of the rack tom in turn and then follow them down to the floor tom. See how they’re all clustered together so you can move from one to another easily but still maintain your position without excessive bodily movement? That’s what we mean by the ‘physical ergonomics‘ of any instrument. It makes for comfortable and faster playing. The visual clues will help you see how it work as you get used to it.
Just tap around on some of the pieces randomly for a while to orient yourself with the interface and sounds. After that, turn one of the groove patterns on and let it play as you watch the lights come alive to the beat. There is really no wrong way to use this instrument. Click the ones you like, or let them play automatically until you get a good sense of what a drum kit looks and sounds like.
