Playing a clean trill on flute with equal speed and evenness isn’t easy! Here’s an interactive chart that demonstrates where to place your fingers, which key(s) to hold down etc for typical diatonic trills. Just click on the screen or use your computer keyboard to practice with the chart until movement feel naturaly.

Above we have the six basic trill (E, F; G, A etc) on the main grid. There’s a picture of a flute underneath. These button represent intervals, showing top and bottom notes along with whether step is a whole or half-tone. If you press one of the buttons, the corresponding trill will be highlighted and play a sample of itself at a fixed pace. You’ll hear this as you practise, perhaps looping a difficult section.

How to Use the Flute Trill Chart

The picture below the notes allow you to repeat sound too, if you want to. With colour, it highlights which fingers move and which keys is held down. For the base note, the blue indicates the keys that remains depressed. The gold marker indicate the single key that rapidly rises and falls. By splitting them, you can easily see why certain trills are more difficult than others. They require just one finger to play while other remain stationary.

At the top is buttons which allow you to alternate between high register (fifth octave) and the lower register (fourth octave). In this case, the flute employ the same fingering patterns on both octaves and expects player to adjust pitch with their embouchure and air speed. When selecting the high octave, you will be able to hear how pattern work in a higher, more brightly pitched way. This allows you to test whether you know the pattern of keys for both upper and lower sections of instrument.

You can also control audio in the practice space with a volume slider that reduces sound if you are practicing alongside others and wish to concentrate on what is being shown. The master volume starts at a reasonable level, which you can turn up or down by dragging slider left or right. This means the demonstration remain audible while you’re back at your flute but doesn’t drown out what you play.

To enlarge the chart to full screen, click the fullscreen button. It will remove all distractions and provide more room for fingering diagrams. This is useful on tablet devices and smaller monitors. To exit full screen mode, simply click the button once more to return widget back to its default size.

For those who don’t want to use their mouse to move around, you can also use keyboard. Press the Tab key to move between controls, then press Space or Enter to select a button. This way you don’t lose focus while quickly getting to what you need in settings. The keyboard doesn’t simulate playing the flute, but it makes things easier to navigate.

You also have a built-in help panel if you need to see how something work or what each color means. The How to Play button opens up a brief explanation for how it all works: What are basic rules? What do those colors mean? It will remind you about the fundamental idea behind diatonic trills, that gold key goes up and blue keys are depressed. Close it to keep things neat by focusing only on the charts.

Here’s a way to exploit this tool if it’s new to you: start off isolating the finger movement first without the addition of sound or air. Observe how the gold key pulse on the diagram. Then, gently follow its movements slowly with your own finger while keeping rest of your hand relaxed. Once you are comfortabley with this gesture, press play and listen to intended speed and rhythm. This should of help close the gap between visualizing the fingering and performing it in real-time. You can do this by matching how you feel timing with what you hear.

Try performing each of your trill at both high and low octaves too. You will discover that, for some people, the trill sounds smooth in one octave yet awkward in another. This may be because their fingers has less tension on them or their breath flow differently across different ranges. By using the toggle button to change the octave you can make an immediate comparison. From this you’ll know which areas requires further practice before attempting it at quicker speeds.

Pick out a familiar trill to play like A to B or G to A. Listen to the preview then check your fingering from the visual so that you know where it begins and finish in terms of pace and evenness. Keep changing examples around until you get the ‘mechanics’ of the trill. From here you will be able to work on trills more clearly without having to guess at finger movements.
